Brig. Gen. George M. Sternberg, who
was at the head of the hospital and
medical service of the United States
at my, for many years, was born in
Otoego 'county, Now York, June 8,
18S8, and received his medical educa
tion at the New York College of Phy
sicians and Surgeons. He began his
army career at the bottom of the lad
der as assistant surgeon In 1861. In
1866 be was promoted to be a captain,
and iu 1893 he was elected to the post,
tlon of surgeon general. During the
civil war Gen. Sternberg served In
Gen. Banks expedition and was In
charge of the general hospital at
Cleveland when peace was declared.
He was a member of the Havana yel
low fev.er commission In 1879 and dl
tected the medical service during the
war with Spain in 1898. He was re
tired for age in 1902.
