The ar-nual crop of attorne'i Ms
fceea qvtet a subject of conslderab ' '
. continent for quite a while. Recently;
a new crop of leal Itghta waa turned I
out which prompted George Trow-1
oriage or the Portland Journal to
'write the following:
Seventy-seven young men took ex
aminations t Salem - this week for
adoaiihlon to the bar.
There are 77 minds and 77 careers
4erotrd to a profession already over
crowded, and In which the struggle
for survival la a grave problem. They
re 77 strong young men taken from
productive Industry and projected Into
aon-productlve endeavor. They are
77 men thrust Into an activity from
which more than half emerge at the
nd of the struggle as failures, and
in wnicn but a small percentage
achieve unquestlnoed success.
Meanwhile Judge Gaynor, famous
a Justice and an executive, says:
-me judicial department or our
Government Is the least efficient of
I1 departments." He adda that the
ielnya and technicalities permitted by
'ludaes would "not be tolerated in
any other department ot government'
au'l that "the way the hlgheat courts
of 'ate years have been declaring void
ntatutea passed for the economic and
aoclal welfare, la Intolerable." He
sa;s, "If we do not stop It, other peo
ple will atop it over our heads."
And what f'tbe delays, the tech
nicalities, the circuitous procedure,
tbe rehearlngs, the appeals and all
the various forms iof . making more
wirk for lawyers and .mora need of
Judaea shall be stopped? When a
day shall be reached,- such as Judge
Oator foretells, when the machln-
ery of law and courts aball be sim
piified and all the roads to Justice
be straightened, what will there be
left for so many lawjer to do? Are
not young men who rukh Into the
law In these unsettled times entering
upon a very precarious future?
May there not be a doubtful out
come to endeavor In a profession al
ready top-heavy with talent?
