within the last few years has the lime
aulphur spray come before the eyes
of the fruit grower in the right light.
Before this time it was considered in
ferior to many of our other spray so
lutions, some of . which it has now al
most entirely replaced, at least for
some diseases.
The method and formula for the
preparation of the lime sulphur as It
Is' now prepared and used Is of quite
roeent origin.. In 1908 A. B,
of the Oregon Agricultural. College
made public this method of prepara
tion and. it has now. practically , re
I'iaced all former methods. .,.
Every orchard should be given an
annual application of this spray for
It will do more to clean up a neglect
ed orhard than any other one spray.
Some of the troubles which may be
controlled by this spray applied dur
ing the dormant season are: San Jose
scale, Oyslershell scale, all of the
aphlds, pear leaf blister mite, the
hibernating larvae of the prune twig
miner and bud moth together with
a'moBt all other Insects which may
Lc found upon the trees during the
winter- and if applied, to peach trees
in the spring before the buds open it
prevents peach leaf curl. It is both
a fungicide and an Insecticide and
when properly diluted may be applied
either during the growing or dormant
period of the plant.' As a summer
Siiray when properly -diluted it pre
vents apple scab and Downey mildew
without the danger of -injury to the
foliage' which so often accompanies
the use of Bordeaux. '
While lime-sulphur has been used
successfully on all of the above trou
bles the one with which its use real
izes the most benelit is in the control
of the San Jose scale. This Insect can
be " nlniost completely controlled by
an annual application of lime-sulphur
spray applied In the spring Just be
fore the buds open. By applying the
spray at this time almost all of the
scales are destroyed but If some es
cape another application in the fall
after the leaves drop may be of con
siderable value in controlling this
post. These applications will also kill
the eggs of tho Wooly, Green, Black
and Brown aphis.
j There are two general, ways of se
' curing this spray, by making the stock
solution (for the stock solution meth
', oil Is best) at home or by buying It
from some reliable firm and diluting
' it according to Its densit" nud the
' senson of the year when it is to be
'used. For a stock c:'itlon which
registers 30 degree Bnuiae, for win
ter strength it should be diluted 1-10,
and for every two degrees decrease In
density It should be composed, of one
part less water; thus, a stock solution
registering 28 degrees Baume should
be diluted 1-9, etc. For summer use,
a solution registering 30 degrees
Baume should be diluted 1-28 and one
part less water should be added for
a decrease of every one degree In the
density of the stock solution.
: Unless one has a large orchard and
can use several barrels of the stock
solution It Is generally considered
best to bay It In the commercial form.
However, the home-made spray is
equally as good if properly prepared !
and can often be made much cheaper, j
This spray should be applied in the 1
form of a mist which Is best obtained:
by the maintainance' of a high nres- j
sure. The whole surface of the tree
should be given a, thorough welting
and a quiet day should be selected to !

In conclusion , we can say that an I
annual application should be given ;
every orchard and the best time to
apply It Is In the spring just before :
the. buds open. Of course it cannot i
cure or prevent every disease known j
but there is untold wealth hidden in
Its proper -application and those who I
made use of It will reap the benefits: i
