mation that Roosevelt will not be a
candidate for the republican presiden
tial nomination, Is seen In a state
ment made today by the president on

"Tho time has come," said Taft,
"when the political atmosphere must
be cleared. The next four months will
be consumed In showing up the lies,
hypocrisy and misrepresentation. Mis
representation must be expected -and
met during the coming campaign. The
confidence of the democrats Is clearly
misplaced.. It Is' due to a misunder
standing," ' ' Stung by recent attacks, President!
Taft indicated that his future course
will be of the offensive order as well
as the defensive.
Taft opened his attack in Ohio and
followed It up last night with a speech
at the republican club banquet. He
- told callers today that he would con
tinue to "combat misrepresentation"
of his administration both, within and
without the party and declared he ln-

form a defense"' in every speech he
