SOCIALISM AJiD ANARCHY.
In another column will be found a
communication from J. B. Stoddard of
this city defending present day so
cialism. His mention of the Obser
ver's edltor.al on secession probably
serves his purpose, although he admits
that the editorial was run merely to
awakon the mind of the reader to the
situation. ' ;;" '
: Now, regarding socialism as it exists
today and what Mr. Stoddard, as its
defender, should explain to the peo
ple, is where socialism ceases and
where anarchy begins. For a long time
this paper was willing to believe that
socialism was not anarchy, did not
harbor anarchistic views and stood
for governmental principles which
might, in part, at least, become of
decided Importance to this nation. But
we have given up that position of late
Because lawlessness lias been cloaked
under the title of socialism with ho
earnest protest from members of that
party. The man who talks about the
red (lag claims he Is a socialist, men
who blow up buildings and commit
murder claim they , are socialists. This
being true, is it but. natural that men
who choose to believe In this country;
who believe that existing evils can yet
he made right, should have a total
disregard for present, day socialism?
There Is left in America considera
ble patriotism. All that Is needed Is
a thorough arousing, and the man who
1s really patriotic whl . believes in
this country, In the flag, in our ances
tors and In our constitution, cannot
swallow socialism. Neither can he re
main silent when socialist speakers
openly advocate replacing the stars
