panies and Chicago has become a cen.

mortgages, the development of agri
culture lias been benefitted and the
policy holders, where the companies
were of a mutual character, have're

turn is consequently not declining ex

the whole is advancing. On the other
band the legal reserve companies' in
vesting in securities have 'suffered by
the decline in the priced . of stand

as they formerly did from the much
greater decline in stocks. Ever since
the Armstrong legislation the Invest
ments -of life Insurance companies In
Btocks has been greatly reduced, bonds
and mortgages being the preferred
forms of investment now. A tabulation
of the investments of the leading life
Insurance companies for 1910 showed
that bonds made up 46 per cent of
their ledger assets, with an. average
return of 4.34 per cent. The propor-''
tion of mortgage loans showed an in
crease as well as an increased return,
it being 6.08 per cent in 1910, as pom
pared with 5.02 per cent In 1909, the
.first year in the last decade In which
the average "rate was more than 5 per
cent. The average return for all clas
sesof Investments for 1910 wab 4.75 per
cent, but the figures for 1911. will not'
be available for several months. As
