Nearly a million bags, 3,000,000 bush
els, had been Imported up to January

swamp the market," said one prophet.

How Parchment Got Its Name.
The Greeks of IVrsaimis are said to
have first prepared parchment from
the skins of the Kont'ur slieop. They
were curried, deprived of nil fat,
thinned uniformly by the knife, dyed
or whitened and finally rubbed dowu
with pumice stone to n smooth and
even surface. Called perKumeutim from
the city of its origin, ths'new mate
rial became parcliemin in archaic
French and parchment in the English
tongue. National Magazine.
