Chicago, Jan. 17. (Special) An
nouncement was made today by the
Canadian Pacific railway tliBt west of
the Great Lakes to the Pacific ocean
all of Ita trains will dispatched by
telephone Instead of telegraph. The
new equipment will be Installd as rap
Idly as possible. At the present time
all dispatching on the main line be
tween Calgary, and Field, B. C, is
being done by telephone. The line
between Field and Swift Current will
be under telephone dispatching in a
few weeks. According to General Sup
erintendent Price the telephonic sys
tem is working splendidly and it is
the Intention to project the telephone
line's eastward to Medicine Hat where
a section of line between that place
and Swift Current already Is equip
ped with telephones.
In the eastern provinces, where the
air Is damper, where fogs are fre
quent and other atmospheric disturb
ances Interfere with the electrical
currents In telephone and telegraph

Plans of the Canadian Pacific rail
way for new buildings in Canadian
cities Indicate another departure. The
company's surplus will be vested In
creasingly in the future In new build
ings In the larger cities. A skyscrap
er is under construction in the heart
of Toronto which will be 16 stories
high and one of the handsomest build
ings In the city, with a frontage of
75 feet on King street and 125 feet
on Yonge street. The ground floor
will be occupied by the railway com
pany for ticket offices Including those
for the steamship and lake service
lines. The top floor will be devoted
to the telegraph operating department
and another floor to the district pas
senger agent, The company purposes
to collect rents Instead of paying them

a chickens gizzard, a three-quarter j
carat diamond, belonging to E. 'M.
Reel, a motion picture machine opera
tor of Spokane, was restored to Its '
owner recently. Reel lost the gem,1
which Is valued at $75, from Its setting
In a ring he wore last September,
while working In the yard at his resi
dence. The chicken, then a young
Rhode Island Red rooster, seized upon
It ss a choice morsel and swallowed ,
It. His digestive qualifications were
too slight, however, for proper dlsln-,
tegratlon and the diamond lodged In ,
the gizzard. In the meanttme Reel
gave up hie search for the sparkler,,
concludlng that It was loBt to him for
all time. t A few days ago he went to
the henhouse and killed the rooster
for dinner. , Mrs. Reel was dressing
the fowl when she found the missing
diamond and now claims proprietor
ship of the stone. Reel's solace was
in the form of choice bits of the roos
ter after It was cooked.

led a special session of the legislature
