Ofllclals of Willamette university at
Salem have sent out greetings to mem
bers of the schools, board of trustees,
and others. In which the financial situ
ation Is set forth. In view of the fact
that a Union county man, A. E. Eaton,
endowed Willamette with $50,000, and
the further fact that several Union
county students are in attendance
there, the greetings will be of local
Interest:
Willamette university wishes you a
happy and prosperous New Year. She
desires that you will help her to have
a prosperous year, and the beginning
of yet greater usefulness.

Campus and equipment ...$ 450,000
Present endowment 125,000
Conditional subscriptions. . . . 240,000
Amount necessary to meet
the offers of Messrs. Booth
and Hill 185,000
This would give a total of $1,000,000
This includes a new building to cost
at least $50,000 In memory of the pio

Were this a new proposition and
anly $185,000 necessary to secure a
school with a million dollars backing
the amount would be subscribed very
quickly.
But this Is better than a new school
proposition. . For UiIb time honored In

It Is day for Willamette. It is time
for her friends to do sacrificial work.

DADDYLONGLEGS.
Thirty Different Tribes, rf Whioh Only
Thro Harm Vegetation.
Probably no Insect Is treated by the
ordinary observer with less respect
than daddy' longlegs. and bis good
Datured readiness to leave various legs
as souvenirs with those who handle
him adds nothing to his personal dig
nlty nor bis good standing In society.
His short snatches of flight across
the grass are not remarkable for grace,
and be possesses neither the personal
attractions of tbe butterfly, tbe terrific
aspect of tbe spider nor tbe glaring
Imperfections of tbe bine bottle.
Daddy longlegs' figure Is rather
more blunt and corpulent than that of
madum bis wife, and among bis thir
ty different tribes only three do seri
ous damage to beets, cabbages, pota
toes, lawns and grass landB. Tbe fe
males are said to lay their eggs as
they fly and are sometimes literally
stuffed full, carrying as many ns 300
at a time, a fact wblch ought to cause
Topknot to blush for sbame. witb her
boastful cackle and one egg a day
cleverness.
.The larvae are footless tblnga, with
black heads and excellent Jaws, and
change to pupae from August to .Sep
tember. They are furnished with
piny rings, which enable them to
work their way to tbe surface of the
ground, and when tbelr emerging time
comes thousands of empty eases may
be seen sticking half oat of the earth
among the grass.

CONTRARY CROCKERY.
Dishes Do Play Quer Pranks at Times,
Though Bewitched.
HouscwlveB, think twice before scold
ing your maids. You know crockery
Is often said to be bewitched, and veri
tably this Is so.
Tbe best ten service will smash It
self to a cup and saucer. Then, tbe
last of tbelr line, they linger on through
stress and storm as if bearing a charm
ed life. Your special set of flowered
Jugs will all rush to tbelr fates with
maddening tendencies to suicide, ex
cept one. That hangs on Its hook, crack
ed, but still alive to mock you with
memory of Its fair sisters. Notice, too,
tbe everyday dinner service with the
dark blue border and tbe gilt edge. , It
flourishes like the proverbial bay tree.
But the very first time you bring out
your best set. purchased by painstak
ing thrift, the soup tureen hurtles mad
ly to the ground. "How dreadfully
careless of you, Mary Anne!" you ex
claim fretfully. But It Isn't the little
maid at all. It's witchcraft.
But a much more weird und wonder
ful proof of sorcery at work In crock
ery occurred the other day. An ordi
nary china Jug suddenly refused to
hold wuter. It leaked badly. Banish
ed to the kitchen shelf, it stood for
months. Unexpectedly one day it was
taken down and used by a stranger
and behaved In a perfectly exemplary
manner. Expluln It by nnythlng else

The Name of Arizona.
Arizona, probably Artzonne In Its
original form, was ihe uatlve and
probably I'lnia name of the place of a

called, on the headwaters of the

Bis mother declared that be gave ber

"Be drives me crazy with his didoes

say. "and when be Is out of It I am
expecting every minute that some one

Be did. In fact, achieve tbe first of bis

She declared she was willing to pay
somebody to take' blm off her bands

Besides his mother, who bad to con

teacher, a certain Miss Borr. . Mr.
Paine tells how unlike to a bed of roses

This was certaiuly disturbing. It

.lane Clemens had usually used her

to get him headed in the right direc

he got outside. He had the forests of
Missouri to select from, but choice was

Across the way was a cooper shop
with a good many shavings outside
Ouo had blown across and lay Just in
front of him. It was an Inspiration.
He picked it up and. solemuly enter

to Miss Hon.
Perhaps Miss Horr's sense of humor
prompted forgiveness, hut discipline
must be maintained.
"Samuel Langhorne Clemens," she
said (he had never beard it all strung

Jimmy Dunlap went, and the switch
wus of a sort to give the little boy an
immediate and permanent distaste for
school, no informed his mother when
he wont home at noon that he did uot
care for school; that he had no desire
to bo n great man; that he preferred
to be a pirate or an Indian nnd scalp
or drown such people as Miss Ilorr.
Young Sam conceived the notion hat
a pirate's li.V would be Joyous and.
with a couple of pals, cruised the Mis
slssippl.
Some of their expeditions were inno
cent enough. They often cruised up to
Turtle Island, about two miles above
nannllial. and spout the day feasting.
You could have loaded a car with tur
ties and their eggs up there and there
wore quantities of mussels anil plenty
of fish. Pishing and swimming were
their chief pasriuies. with general ma
rauding for adventure. Where Ihe rail
road bridge now ends on the Missouri
side was their favorite swimming hole
that and along Bear creek, a seclud
ed, limpid water with special Interests
of its own. Sometimes at evening they
swam across to Glasscock's island, the
rendezvous of Tom Sawyer's "Black
Avengers" nnd the hiding place of
Huck nud Nigger Jim. Once, though
this was considerably Inter, wheu ho
wns sixteen, Sam Clemens swam across
to tbe Illinois side aud then turned
and swam back again without laud
ing, a distance of at least two miles as
he had to go. He was seized with a
cramp on the return trip. His legs
fcecnme useless, nnd he wns obliged to
make the remaining distance with bis
amis. It wns n hardy life they led.
and It Is not recorded that they ever
did any serious damage, though they
narrowly missed It sometimes.
