Production at Steward Tonight
It Is not often that wo are tempt
ed to find fault with a producer of a
plays for being too generous, but that
Is the kind of play producer Frederic
Thompson happens to be. He wants
to give too much for the money. As a
result of his extravagance he has
made "Polly of the Circus," with pret
ty Ida St. Leon, a case of "Polly" and
the circus. There are not many peo
ple who will object to this, however.
There may ho some who will agree
with us that Polly is much more In
teresting and so much more Import
ant to the little drama of which she
Is a part than a hundred circuses
could ever be, that the show scene
should bo eliminated. But probably
there will be as many more who will
enlov the sight of a real lady bareback
rider turning soniesaults off the back;
of a real horse ambling patiently j
around the Inside of a real ring ami,
keeping time to the oom-onh horn or
a real circus tune. It Is not often
playgoers object to being offered too
much entertainment, even though the
extra measures provo a clear case or
assault and battery with a poor old
drama as victim. "Polly of the Cir
rus" Is a pretty, appealing story of
hearts of the tried and true type, un
til the circus happens Into It, then
wo havo a three ring circus In full
operation on the stage.
Among the many features of this
play, "Polly of the Circus," which will
he seen at the Steward to
night are "FUngo.' the cele
brated thoroughbred Arabian horse;
also clowns, acrobats, bareback riders,
ringmasters, aerial and horizontal bar
acts a real circus on the stage.
This Is the same production that
appeared at the Liberty theatre, New
York City, for one solid year.
It Helped the Captain Out of an Em
barrassing Situation.
In the good old days the revenue cut
ters carried small rilled cannon, but
they were only used to Ure salutes with
uud now and then break up a derelict.
The gunners were never expected to
hit auytbiug. When they used the
guns on Hunting wrecks the cutter
would be alongside, and the master
gunner wounl bang uivay until he'd
smnshed the wreck or used up his am
munition. . No one ever thought of
keeping tub.
Captain E. P. KertholT told a story
the other day which illustrates the con
ditions which formerly prevailed on
the "treasury fleet." Wheu it is a mat
ter of running down smugglers or put
ting mi end to poaching or mapping a
bad channel or destroying derelicts the
'cutters average 100 per cent ot etfl-
ciency.
"Few gunners could hit a target," he
said. "Really there was little need.
They didn't use a loaded shell once in
a lifetime. But now and then the
board of Inspectors came on board, and
then every one was worried and nerv
ous until the ordeal was over. The In
spectors visited the cutter commanded
by a friend of mine. lie ordered out
the firing squad.
" 'Bang:' went the ride. The projec
tile hit the target squarely In the ceu
ter. " 'Cense firing,' ordered the enptain
happily. And be turned to the inspect
ors, pleased as Punch. 'There's no use
wasting ammunition.' he said. 'Our
gunners can do that every time.' "

Mi hen Rhymes Come Hard.
