Deputy Game Warden Building One
ladder and Others Contemplated. '
Chas. B. Oral, the game warden tor
this district, la at the. Hall farm on
Catherine creek, aupertntending the
construction of fish ladder In the
dam owned by W. J. Townley. Thia
is the seventh ladder which was con
structed by Oral's work in thia dis
trict and anglers hope that he will fin
ish up the good work before he quits
the Job. It is reported that he was
In consultation with the district at
torney about the old Poye dam on
Catherine creek at what Is known as
the Robbins mill. It is hoped that
this old sore will be torn out of the
stream as it has been a menace to
the propogatlon of fish and of the mi
gration of fish for 30 years.

Eugene, Nov. 22. (Special) Last
Friday evening the annual "Vrh.
man Smoker." given to the men of
the Freshman class took place at the
Kappa Sigma fraternity house and
proved to be a most enjoyable affair.
All the La Grande "Fresch" attended
in a body, and many took part In the
"stunts" Bhat were pulled oft. Henry
Heidenreich and Lowell . Williamson
met in a three round fistic combat,
Harold Grady boxed a three round
bout, and Broadbridge and'Tom Boy
len of Pendleton also pulled off a
three round stunt ' In the latter part
of the evening a vaudeville team was
brought from one of the show houses
to furnish " entertainment for the
crowd." " ' ?

Apple Show in Spokane.
Spokane, Wash., Nov. 23. With the
promise of eclipsing all previous rec
ords in the wealth of exhibits and the
accompanying festivities, Spokane's
fourth annual Natonal Apple show op
ened today, to continue for one week.
Tin exhibit range from carloads of
apples down to a single plate of the
fruit and represent practically all of
the great orchard districts of the Pa
cific slope and the intermountain
country. .
