witty and entertaining and the mid

when, the htfbnobbing was ended. The
Elgin Knights returned to their var

Diamonds From Sugar.

consists of carlton united with oxygen
d byflroseu. The curbou can be
easily separated out. nnd In certain ex
periments for the production of dia
monds this nugnr carbon lius been em
ployed. The diamonds, so "produced
were, of course, very small and des
titute of commercial value, but still
they are real diamonds, and the
chemical result achieved would be no
greater intrinsically if they were as
large as the Kohinoor. The hop has
often been held out that un improve
ment In the process of manufacturing
diamonds may be effected whereby
the necessity of dissolving the carbon
In molten Iron may be dispensed with,
and tho required combination of great
pressure with great heat may bo
brought about by some such opera
tion as squeezing" the carbon between
red hot metal plates.
