Of the story of Colleen Bawn, little
need be said for to many It 1b famil
iar and the film is sufficiently explan
atory to require a modicum of narra
tive. Hardress Cregan meets and
falls in love with Eily O'Connor, the
"Colleen Bawn," and is secretly mar
ried to her. His mother desires that
lie take for his wife his cousin Anne
Chute, who is wealthy and who will
provide'money to raise the mortgage

and finds hts way to Elly's cottage at
Jluckrock head where 10 days after he
comes to his senses and confesses to
drowning the Colleen. This confes
sion leads to nn attempt to arrest Har
dress Cregan just as he is about to
be married to Annie Chute upon the
charge of having incited the crime.
But in the confusion Father Tom, to
fvhom the confession was made, Myles
and the Colleen enter and the affair is
cleared up. Hardress acknowledges
Eily as his wife and his ambitious
mother finally accepts her.

School census in the La Grande
school district Is being taken. The
annual count of school children noses
was commenced todaywhen Adna B.
Rogers as enumerator commenced a
I systematic count. This census Is ta
ken yearly to establish the school levy
and for this reason It is essential
that every parent see to it that the
work is properly done. It will re
quire about 10 days to complete the
count and if at the end of that time
the enumerator has not been around
it would behoove the parents to call

Directly across the north of Eng
land, between points near Carlisle and
Newcastle, ran Hadrian's wall, the
northern boundary of the Roman em
pire. It Is generally supposed to bave
been erected by the Emperor Hadrian

was of stone and was eight feet thick
and twelve feet high. It was guarded
by eighteen military stations, gar
risoned by cohorts of Roman soldiers,

towers. . South of the stone wall was
a series of enrthen ramparts, and be

road, still In use as a highway. Of
this vast work comparatively few por
tions remain, a matter of wonder, per
haps, when one sees tbe solidity of
the sections of the wall which still
stand, but easily explained by the fine
stone walls in the immediate vicinity.

A Medieval Megaphone.
A curiosity of great antiquity ia still

says an English magazlpe. This is a
quaint speaking trumpet with nn ob
scure early history, dating back to the
times of the Knights Templars. In
shape It resembles a French horn and
Is more than five feet long, having a
bell at the end of theiradunted tube.
It was formerly six few in length, but
Is now telescoped at the .Joints, where
the metal has apparently decayed.
Tradition declures it was formerly
sounded from the tower to summon

Rare Peruvian Ware.
Vessels of odoriferous clay were lrn
ported early In the sixteenth century
from Peru. Chile and Mexico by the
Portuguese merchants, to which were
given tbe name of buccaros. So highly
was this ware esteemed that only the
wealthiest collectors could afford to
possess entire specimens. Broken
pieces were set in gold or silver or
ground to powder to bo used to scent
cakes and confections and to perfume
gloves and handkerchiefs. It was also
supposed to possess medicinal prop
erties and was prescribed by contem
porary physicians for certain ail
ments. The great demand for the
buccaros resulted In the alleged dis
covery of sceuted clays in Portugal
and the potters of tho time used them
to fashion all sorts of drinking ves
sels on which they Impressed a seal
or stamp, hence the adoption of the
name terra slgillata.

Tbe complaint against the high cost

How to Avoid Divorce.
My advice to husbands who wish to
avoid divorce is this: Don't quote
mother. Call- up your wife while at
business and ask how she is and tell
ber that you called ber up just to hear
her voice. Take her a box of candy,

stop courting, for as soon as you do
some other mau will begin. Make
your wife your companion. Take ber
out with you. and when yon have to
have a big time take your wife along
and the divorce evil will be lessened.
