Oct. 18. (Special) An innovation lu
western coUege life was inaugurated
at Whitman by the organization of a
Students' Politics club. It is the plan
of the club to discuss and have pre
sented some of the practical problems
that are confronting the American
public today and especially the prob
lenis as found in our. larger cities.
The membership of the club Is not
confined to students but any one In
terested in tha work may be admitted.
The club will hold at least one meet
ing per month. Some of the leading
men of the city and of the northwest
will be secured to lve addresses dur
ing the year.

Gathering of Educated Marks Ordi
nation to Presidency.
Minneapolis, Minn., Oct. 18. In the
rresence of one of the most notable
gatherings of American educators eyei
assembled at one time Dr. George E.
Vincent was installed as president of
the University of Minnesota today,
succeeding Dr. Cyrus Northrop, wtio
retire some time ago after having
served for ZZ years as head of the uni
versity. The inauguration brought to
this city representatives of more than
50 of the leading universities and col
leges of the United States and Can
ada. The day's program was opened
with-an academic procession In which
the educators, alumni, students, fac
ulties and guests', all wearing academ
ic gowns according to their degree,
took part. , The procession was fol-,
lowed by formal exercises In the arm.
ory. Dr. Vincent was introduced by
his predecessor, Dr. Northrop. In a
brief speech of welcome, former Gov
ernor John Llnd. president of the
board of regents, formally turned over
to the new president the administra
tion of the university. Greetings from
other Institutions and from the fac
ulty, student body and alumni of the
University of Minnesota followed.
President William O. Thompson of the
Ohio state university presented th
congratulations oT the National Asso
ciation of State Universities. The fo
mal exercises concluded with the in
augural address of the new president
Dr. George E. Vincent, who becomes
third president of the University ol
Minnesota, comes to the Institution
from the University of Chicago, whe'fl
he served for ten years as profesof
of sociology. He was born In Rock-
ford, III., 47 years ago and is the son
of Bishop John H. Vincent of the
Methodist Episcopal church. After he
graduated from Vale In 1885 he engug-
ed in editorial work for one year and
then made an extensive tour of Europe
and the Orient. Upon his return to
America he became literary editor ol
the Chautauqua Press. He went to the
University of Chicago In 1892 as a fel
low In sociology and continued as an
instructor and professor at that Instl
tutlon until his election last year as
president of the University of Mlnne
sota.
