' Stealing a suit case from a room in thi Foley hotel occupied by Miss Gene Macllroy and Miss Mamie Rasmusson, both of Elgin and filling it with valu ables brazenly stolen ; from various rooms on the same floor of the hotel, Gerge Davis, 'a negro from the east, last evening, unsuccessfully execut-d one of the most daring robberies of recent months in this city when he loaded himself with all the valuables he could find, slipped down the Are escape and for a time successfully eluded the hastily formed posse. It was between 6 and ? o'clock last eve nlng that Mr.' McAllister a traveling Salesman stopping at tha Foley, saw a negro carrying a suit case trying to effect an entrance to a room from the hallway. McAllister made Inquir ies and th-s nesro replied he was look ing .for the landlady.- McAllister ap prise the hotel office of his discovery and P. A. Foley, hastily went to the floor but found no one. At the same time, without any reason except prob able Instinct, Day Clerk E. J. Poulson stepped to the rear of the hotel. He saw a negro drop from the fire escape and make, pell mell, for the railroad yards. A small posse set on his trail but no one was found for a time.
