"Referring "again to the national
guard proposition, listen to the fol
lowing from Wilfred F. Smith, member
of the general staff at Portland re
ceived by me yesterday," said . Mr.
Pratt .today ; " 'I am very anxious to
see you make that La Grande company
go. I will warn you before hand that
It will be no easy Job to keep, up a
company of militia to. keep up hq
enthusiasm and attendance. Being on
the staff I am familiar withv the trou
bles, of thj out-o:-town companies
Baker City, Pendleton,, Oregon.; City,
Woodburn and Salem companies.
However, , I know of no reason why
La Grande should not as well as the
rest of them, and in my , opinion, all
the probabilities are in favor of it
doing even better.', This was a per
son letter from friend Smith, and can'
not, of course, be quoted as official,
but we are aure of . strong support
from Smith when th matter Is taken
