POLICE TAKE HAND AND LET LA

Men Vast Slnd in. Lln Awaiting
Tarn at Famous Bridge Rush. .
' New York, Aug. 26. A new func
tion has Just b:en added to the many
which the New York police are called
upon to perform. Their newest duty
consists of teaching politeness to the
male inhabitants of the city. The
reform has been Introduced where it
undoubtedly was mostr urgently need
ed at the Manhattan' end of the old
Brooklyn Bridge. The congestion at
this point every evening at the rush
hour Is unequalled anywhere else in
the world and has aroused the anger
and disgust of those who have oc
casion to witness it. In the rush of
the tens of thousands of home-goers
for seats In the Brooklyn-bound cars
men and women have been trampled
upon and frequently serious injuries
have occurred. . The waiting crowd
.. -,v' - ' ... :i
USUI V.Ci W . W.UAW
they came to a stop, and in th.a mad
contest women naturally had little
chance to secure seats. ; Captain
Bourke who has had charge of tho
police at this" point determined to
change this state of affairs. For the
past few evenings he lias lined up his
men and compelled the crowd to wait
u.n.ti! tl)9 car? came to a stop before !
attempting to board 'them and then
has given the women first chance to
secure seats. As a result from five
to ten thousand women who formerly
were compelled to stand in the cars
have obtained seats. The "car hogs"
have been too shame-faced to make
serious protests and it is believed
that, a continuance of the present sys
tem will result In the abolition of
what has always been of the most dis
graceful scenes to be observed in the
city.'';,,;.'; -; M
The business and financial leaders
of . the country's affairs have been
watching with keen and almost pain
ful interest the course of the gigantic
strike that for a tow days almost par
alyzed British industry. When It was
announced early In ' the week that aj
settlement was In sight there was a
feeling of great relief. The interest
in the subject here was not Inspired
wholly by the knowledge that any ex
tended struggle would seriously af
f.act international trade. In even a
greater measure it was due to the
feeling among well-informed men that
there is grave' danger of serious labor
troubls in this country and to a tsar
that a serious controversy on' the
other side of the Atlantic might stir
up Bimilar troubles over here. Rail
road managers, while not Inclined to
talk on the subject for publication,
admit privately that if the falling off
In net earnings is not checked short
ly the roads will face , the positive
necessity of reducing wages, since the
Interstate'Commerce .Commission has
refused to permit the Increase of the
rates. . On the othef? hand nobody
who understands the present temper
of the employes believes for an In
stant that they will submit to a re
duction of wages. Their claim Is that
the Increased cost of living has more
than absorbed the advance wrung
from the roads last year and many of
them are urging the formulating of
further demands which It would be
Impossible for the roads to grant un
der existing conditions. It Is this
situation more than anything else
that la held by Insiders to account for
the recent decline la several Import
ant railroad stocks. :
New Jersey which has suffered long
and silently from the gibes of : the
professional and , amateur humorists
of the New York press on account of
the number and ferocity of Its mos
quttos has had a chance during tho
past two months to turn the tables
on Its detractors. Never In the his
tory of New. York have the Inhabi
tants of Manhattan suffered so great
ly from the mosquito pest as during
the present summer. There has been
a general tendency to attribute the
winged application' to an Invasion
from the Jersey side of the Hudson,
but a scientific Investigation has led
to the conclusion that many at leaBt
,of the annoyers are home-bred, and as,
1 a result a demand has arisen for the
lolling of the lakes In Central Park
land In other parts of the city. One
1 of the results of the prevalence of the
1 mosquito pest has been a shattering
j of the generally accepted theory that
! these insects do not fly more than '50
! feet above ground, for they have been
; found in the upper rooms of the tall
est , hotels and apartment houses as
w.2ll as in structures of lesser height.
