league. The exchange will distribute
a carload of fine epples and the league
will attend to their free distribution.
Space has been taken at the land
show by the league and an informa
tion bureau will bo maintained then

state will be handed out to land show
visitors and representatives of the

questions about this section of the
country. Each community In the state
should forward literature to the Port
land Commercial club, so it can be
sent on to Pittsburg.

and the Northwestern Fruit exchange
has generously decided to provide n

California State Fair
Sacramento, Cal., Aug. 25. On the
eve of the opening day of the Califor
nia State Fair, all Indications are that
it will be far better than any of Ha
predecessors.' During the last wek.

exhibits of many kinds have been ar
riving and the fair grounds present a
lively appearance. Tomorrow has
been set aside as women's day and
suffragists from all parts of the state
are to attend.

Dr. Irwin, Erstwhile Educator, Pastor
at la Grande, Dead.
A pioneer educator of this state, at
one time president of the Blu? Moun-!
tani university when that school was
in existence In La Grande, and a pas
tor in the local Methodist church, ;
passed away at Seattle yesterday. His
name was Dr. George Irwin and will
be remembered by men and ' women
who have Hved'hero the past 20 years
as a man of exceptional gifts. A Seat
tle dispatch of yesterday says: '
Rev. George Irwin, D. D., aged 78,
pastor of Rlverton Methodist Episcor
pal church, died at his om here yes
terday. Dr. Irwin was born in Day
ton, O. He came west 30 years ago,
settling at Walla Walla. From 1894 to
1898 he was superintendent of public
instruction of Oregon and later serv
ed as United Staiii commissioner of
instruction at Douglas, Alaska.
Dr. Irwin for a time served as sup
erintendent of the Chemawa Indian
school near Salem, where he made a
distinct success of educational work
among the young Indians. He secured
his appointment as the result of ac
tive work In several campaigns In Ore.
gon, among them the one- in which J.
G. Blaine was candidate for pn;sldent
Dr. Irwin was one of the most effect
ive campaign speakers in the -state
at that time and was neard In every
county. While in Alaska, at th3 head
of the educational department of that
territory, he also published a dally
paper very successfully. He leaves a
widow, one son, ueorgo a. lrwm, a
Portland hop dealer; and a daughter,
Mrs. Dayton, of Astoria. The body
will be taken to Salem for burial. .
