- The Oregon Woman's Christian
Temperance union baa done many
food things the past year, but none
better than the erection of a cottage
26 by 30 feet In size, with a roomy
porch across the entire front, and two
stories high, ou the Chautauqua
grounds at Gladstone near Oregon
City.' This ws8 primarily" intended
for the work of the organization dur
ing the assembly where they maintain
headquarters each year, with dally
programs covering every reform, giv-
. Ing special attention to tha one for
whose work they are organized. They
also keep open a rest room tor tired
women and girls, and have sleeping
accommodations for about 20 women
In the second story. They plan, bow
ever, to keep this open next year during-
the months of July and August
with a matron who will haperon the
working women and girls, and afford
such a breathing; time In God's out'
doors for a nominal cost. They hope
. to be able to open one more such out-
' lug resort next year but this one so
near Portland, and reached with the
expense of a few cents, will be a god

H Wotld Bs Miracle to Explain a
Miracle.
N the days wben board schools were
young a visit was paid to one of
those schools by a local dignitary-
wbo had theories on the subject of
Scripture lessons. He requested the
headmaster to pick out a particularly
dull boy and let him ask that lad a
few questions. Whereupon the follow
ing dialogue ensued: ' "i'
"Now, George Jones, what do you
understand by a miracle?"
Boy, looking helplessly at visitor,
makes no answer. ; .
Visitor (triumphantly, to headmas

of ita meaning Is to penetrate this sort
of skull. ' He can't tel) me what a mira

ity) If yon do, sir, you'll have wrought
a miracle yourself. ! haven't a duller

Visitor (nrgumentatlvely) But you
couldn't, you know, if you saw It was

Boy (doggedly) I -should see It

Visitor (recovering from a disconcert
tag pause) But If some one told you
that It was th sun? ;
Boy fcmpbatlcally) I should say he

Visitor (angry at such persistent stu
pidity) But suppose I told you that it

Boy (hesitates a moment, then, In
accents of conviction) I should say
