Evander M. Law, one of the few sur
viving generals of the confederate
states army, was 75 years old today.
General Law Is a native of Darling,
ton, S. C. He entered the confederate
army early In 1861 as lieutenant colo
nel of the Fourth Alabama Infantry
and at tha clbee of the war bad been
advanced to the rank of major-gener
al. After the war he practiced law
for a time In South Carolina and later

was Mr. Flnley who Induced Presi
dent Roosevelt to set aside the Mal

Antelope Slaughtered. v
With less than 700 antelope remain
ing in Oregon, evidence has reached
the office of State Game Warden Fin- j
ley that a sheep owner of southeast
ern Oregon has systematically plan
ned the killing of many of these ani
mals during the last two winters. The
object of this unlawful attempt. It is
said, ia to provide bait for coyotea. The
carcass of the antelope- ia poisoned
where it falls, which, when eaten by
the coyote, consequently destroys that
animal. Deputies are now seeking ex.
act evidence, with the Intention of dis
covering the guilty party, when dill
gent prosecution will follow; The iden
tity of the sheap owner Is, as yet, un
known, although the officers are on
the trail of the man, who will be made
a striking example of the seriousness
of this infraction of the law. .

Houghton, Mich., August 7. Hough

ready for one of the biggest events In
