CM. HUMPHREYS. Recorder of the City of La Grande.
hoa. lie hosts j-'glrt round with rugged'

ling 'neath the shadow 'of the hills
grew thriving towns. Far to the east'
'.':ts.' misty" vapors' mark the home ot
to.ling 'springs and thither come the
their magic, waters and be healed.
Stretching far beneath the moun
tain Rlopea lie level lands that yield
with easy graco their harvests rich.
Broad fields of Wheat now waving
'neath the summer skieg like emerald
seas that, later change to gold. Great
fields of beets which soon through
cnrel bruislngs yield their wealth of
sweetnesg to the needs of man. Arid
orchards vast In spring time all a
bloom, then bending 'neath a load of
ripening fruit, N
Not only fruitful is this beautiful
vale but fair exceeding fair to look
upon throughout the changing sea
sons of the passing years. When win
ter clothes the hills In snow, like sen
tinels grim the mountains stand now
glistening in the sunllght'g glow then
wrapped In drapery of mist and cloud
Spring Joyous spring arrives. She
throws upon the mountain slopes a
carpet green all strewn with flowers
of varied hues. Song birds arrive
and all the land is glad.
Through long bright summer days
the mountain sides assume far richer,
deeper hues. Then as the sunlight
sinuous creeps from place; to place
j along those furrowed walls by its soft
warm caress it seeing to draw from
the secret chambers of the mountain's
heart the gleam of gold and precious
gems that through past eg:s have
lain unnoticed there, ' : ,.'
Now r?own the wesUrn sky Sol's
golden har!ot s"!d?s to m??t th' hi):

lime. Th' . waiting , fleecy clouds
catch - all the glancing sunbeams
, bright and hold them prisoners close
'till in their bosonig burn the sam-o
bright fire that grows within the opal's
heart. A long bright rosy sha'ft es
capes and rests In wanton glee in
yon high peaks that mark the north
ern limit of the valley's broad ex
panse and lingers there. Slow fades
those bright prismatic hues 'till all
the land is mellow with the golden
glow that merges' into twilight's
dusky shadows. As one by one the
night lamps In the sky begin to burn
and Luna's shining face fills all the
land with silvery light, In estacy the
soul exclaims: - "How great la man
that Thou art mindful of him amidst
the marvelous splendors of the creat
