The La Grande Commercial club will at tend to preserving any fruits of merit brought to their rooms over the La Grande National Bank building, label ing each sample with the grower's name.,v Many a gallon of fine straw- berries should be brought and should be cut from the vine with a pair of scissors, leaving a long stem. The same amount . of cherrle should be brought with their stems on. The fruit should be handled very careful ly to prevent bruising. Instructions regarding the preser vation of fruits in antiseptic fluids. ; General Directions. Select the finest specimens of the fruit, both as to form and size. Han dle them carefully to avoid all bruis ing, and place them In bottles, arrang tng the specimens Bo as to show them to the best advantage. Fill each bot tie to the neck with fruit, then pour on the fluid recommended, filling the bottles to within one-half of an inch of the stopper, so as to entirely cover the fruit; then place the stopper in the bottle, and run a little melted bees wax or paraffins over the joint to make It air tight. Tie the stopper down with a piece of strong cotton, and attach to each bottle a label con aining the following particulars; The name of the variety of fruit, name and address of the grower, with the state in , which the person resides. Write also in each case in one corner of the label the letter suggested to indicate the fluid which has been used. Wrap the bottles In paper to exclude the light and preserve in a cellar or other cool place until required for shipment. Strawberries and raspber ries should be cut fom the plants or bushes with a pair of scissors, leaving a short piece of stem attached to each. Fluid Xo. 1. Formalin (formaldehyde), 1 pound (16 ounces); water, 44 pounds; alco hol, 5 pints. Allow the mixture to stand, and should there be any sedi ment pour off the clear liquor and fll- ter the remainder through Altering paper. This two per cent solution of formalin or formaldehyde, has been found very useful for preserving the strawberries, so as to give them a natural appearance. In each case where this fluid is used mark F on one corner of the Jabel. Fluid So. 2. . , A solution of boric acid in the pro portion of two per cent Dissolve one pound of boric (boraclc) acid In 45 pounds of water, agitate until dissolv ed, then add five pounds of alcohol. If the fluid Is not clear allow it to stand and settle, when the clear upper por tion may be poured off and the re mainder filtered. , In each case where this fluid is used mark B on one corner of the label. Fluid Ko. 8. A solution of sine chlorid In the proportion of 3 per cent Dissolve one-half pound of sine chlorid in 15 pounds of water, agitate until dis solved, then add 1 2-3 pints of alcohol. Allow the mixture to stand until set tied; then pour off the clear fluid and filter the remainder. In each case where this fluid is UBed- mark Z on one corner of the label. . Fluid Xo.4. Sulphurous acid one plat, water eight pints, alcohol one pint. Allow the mixture to stand, and should there be any sediment pour off the clear liquor and Alter the remainder. 1 In each case where this Sued Is used mark' S on one corner of the label.
