NEXT DOOR TO
CITY HALL
. Saturday night marks the appear
ance In this city, of William Sterling
Battls. tine, master of Dickens' char
acters, and a great many La Grande
people look to him to give the finest
entertainment of any on the Chautau
qua program. It would bo hard to
conceive of anything more entertain
ing and instructive' than the "travels
through Africa" delivered last even
ing by Gabriel Magulre, but to those
who are at all familiar with Dickens'
characters, it is conceded that the old
English classics will prove a channel
for Battls to' entertain with finish and
an instructive, feature that would be
hard to emulate by any one.
Pottt Brands alone in this country
as an Impersonator of Dickens' char-!
acters who has devoted his whole time
and talent to this work only, and who
has succeeded in catching the spirit
of the author in tba spoken word and
a faithrul portrait of the individual by
the use of clever "make-up" and mar
velous facial transformation, . '
Charles Dickens was not only one of
the most versatile of authors', but also
one of the most human of authors.
His characters seem to approach more
closely to the reader or the student
than do those of most writers. Be
sides being a most minute student of
character his exposition of the popu
lar wrongs of his day were most pow
erful. , The description of the terrible
outrages perpetrated upon the de
fenseless pupils in the so called board
ing schools, as related in the account
of "Dotheboy'B Hall' in Nicholas Nick
elby, awoke all England to the nature
of many of these institutions and n,
parliamentary Inquiry was at once in
stituted, with th9 result that hundreds
of .private schools were abolished. In
hi8 celebrated satire, "Jarndyce and
Jarndyce," the vexatious delays and
dilatory tactics of the courts of Eng
land were held up to ridicule, result
ing in a speedy correction of the
abuses. His descriptions of the poor
er Quarters of London, of the desper
ate poverty and the savage criminality
of many of the Inhabitants of the
poorer portions of London are surpas
sed by but one author, Eugene Sue.

PRETTIEST THDSTG
In MvHomcJ"?
is a Macey jBook Cabinet
To set one of the new Macey Book Cabinet in your home is
to set before your children an example of auch good taste that
throughout all the days ol their Uvea they will feel ita refining
influence. , '
Macey JBook Cabinets are the first aectionnt bookcases ever
built after the desijne of the old mantera. These old masters,
Sheraton, Chippendale, Robert Adam and Fra Junipero, wero
as great in Furniture as Shakespeare in Literature, as Mozart in
Music, aa Michael Angelo in Painting.
' The new Macey Book Cabinets are the only sectional book
case that can be added to, both upward and sideways, and still
not look like sectionnl bookcases, but like he'rlooms of furniture.
Can be taken from or rearranged without destroying their beauty
nd style.
.. So artful is the cabinet work that dealers frequently have to
take them apart to convince customers that they are sectional.
Macey old master designs harmonize with a.ny furniture you
now have, and are made in such variety of popular prices, sizes,
woods and finishes, that they fit any requirement of space orpurse.
Macey Sectional Book Cabinet are built under the direction
of Mr. O. H. L. Wernicke, the father of sectional bookcase and
President of The Macey Company. Mr. Wernicke' name is
till used in the corporate title of competing firm, with which
he has long since had no connection.
' If you wih to give your home and your children the most in.
piling influence you ever gave them, you will go to a furniture
. store and see these new Macey Book Cabinets before you forget it
