Portland, June 28. Editor Evening
Observer: Through your columns I
want to thank the many of your pat
rona and the many of my frknds for a
splendid summer trip, with several
weeks of varied and probably expen
sive entertainment.
I have just concluded my extension
trip and am visiting C. R. Lisle, my
uncle, and family. In Portland. Next
Monday morning I shall begin my
journey toward home, stopping off for
a few days to visit several relatives
uww. lueu uui ior ' nome, sweet
home." Already I realize that I shall
be as happy to et home1 as I was de-J
lighted to learn that I had, won . the
trips away from home which I have
been taking.
My friends may remember that I
was one of three contestants who won,
besides trips to the Portland . Rose
Festival, extension trips to San Fran
cisco. After a week's excitement and
continuous entertainment in and about
Portland, and at Gearhart, "by the
sea," the other two contestants de
cided that they had seen enough for
one summer and they elected to take
scholarships in lieu of extension trips
to the Golden Gate. That left me to
go alone. The Observer's Contest
manager helped me out of this dilem
ma by offering, to send Miss Rotan,
his assistant, with me in case I should
choose the other elective trip the
one over Puget Sound. This I decid
ed to do.
Our Miss Rotan has acquaintances
in the cities of the Puget Sound coun
tries and she is familiar with the cit
ies, having assisted Mr. Brock to con
duct newspaper contests In all. She
took me to points of interest and caus
ed me to meet some very nice people.
As tourists say,; "we did" Tacoma,
Seattle, Victoria and . Vancouver, as
well as intermediate towns, spending
six days in the tour of Puget Sound.
Our steamer trips, In the palatial
steamers of Puget Sound waters, were
a novelty to me and ought to be a
treat to anyone. The water was rough
In only one place, crossing the straits
of Fuca, and I don't want anybody to
ask me, when I get home, what hap
pened there.
As a business place, the city of Van
couver Impressed me most as a play
ground for the tourist. Victoria Is
most charminir. As an ui to date
American city, Seattle has them U
goln?. But ns a place for both resi
dence nnd business Portland, our own
metropolis, outstrips any of th? oth
ers. In the 17 days I have been travel
ing I have seen much of the best hotel
life of these northwestern cities. But
the best entertainment and the finest
accommodations that I have had In the
entire time was at the Hotel Gearhart,
where our party got acquainted with
the Pacific ocean.
So far the weather for travelling
and sightseeing has been perfectly
Ideal.
At different times and in djffeernt
place I have met people who now
live or who formerly lived in the
Grande Ronde valley. Former resi
dents of the Grande Ronde ask me
numerous questions about their old
friends, and of course, I give a good
report on everybody. ' In travelling
over the valley to gather contest votes
I got an acquaintance which particu
larly gratifies me to carry the per
sonal which these good people want
to hear.
As I travel about and enjoy this
summer's outing I often think of the
different friends and strangers who
contributed votes towards my securing
this trip; and I think of them with
gratitude. I hope some .day that ev
ery one of you may have a Pacific
coast trip as good as mine. I am very
