den, the millionaire merchant and
philanthropist, attained his 75th birth-
day today. Mr. Ogden was born In
Philadelphia and started his career lu
that city as an errand boy at $1.50 a
week. In 1S83 be became associated
with John Wanamaker., and later he
made a large fortune as a partner Ja
the Wanamaker stores. Of late years
Mr. Ogden has been prominently Iden
tified with the movement for education

Dr. C. T. Bacon was chosen a mem
ber of the La Grande school district
at the annual election yesterday after
noon by a wide majority. His nearest
competitor was County Recorder I. R.
Snook who was given 29 votes as
against 135 for Dr. Bacon. Eight scat
tering votes were cast One of the
two important referendum measure
wr adopted. School Clerk Arthur
Williams will be reimbursed in the
sum of about $1,500 for losses In the
farmers and Traders National bank, a
sum which he Immediately pakl over
to the school district from his own
purse.
The play grounds proposition was
ruthlessly defeated, receiving only 77
votes as against 114 in opposition.
The opposition to Hh'e purchase of
the vacant block for playground pur
poses wag well organized while thos
favoring the measure did little to en
act Jtg passage by a heavy vote"

Modern Woodmen of America in the
history of the order. It is estimated
there are- 10,000 Woodmen in the city
and others are arriving on every train.
A committee of several -hand red is car
ing for the-visltors, and the city Is
decorated in carnival fashion. The
opening session of the head camp In
Convention hall this morning was en
tirely routine and consisted of ad
dresses of welcome by the mayor and
others, a response by Head Consul A.
R. Talbot of Nebraska and the appoint
