Philadelphia June 17, 1848. He was
graduated from the United States nav-
jal academy in 1869 and continued to

resigned to enter mercantile life. He

coal mining business and subsequently
became prominent In railroad, bank
, Inp, steamship and various other cor
porations. In addition to his home in
Philadelphia Mr. Berwind maintains a
