today from a week of sightseeing and

La Grande last evening on her way to
Union after attending the Institute in
Elgin Sunday. ,
George T. Cochran, superintendent
of water district in Eastern Oregon,
is in Pendleton attending the meeting
of some 300 water users in Umatilla
county where adjudication of rights Is
now going on.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred G. Taylor, former
residents of La Grande and now locat
ed In Lewlstown, are here to spend a
week with friends. Mr. Taylor was
manager of the sugar factory here foe

Miss Minnie Robson, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Robson, lately of
Red Wing, Minn., but now permanent
ly located in La Grande, has reached
the city from Red Wing and will live
in La Grande, hereafter. Miss Robson
is a school teacher.
Canton' City of the Dead.
In Canton, about eighty miles from
Hongkong, there Is a place known as
the City of the Dead. There are 194
small houses.' in each of which a corpse
Is lodged, at the rate of 125 for the
first three mouths and then at a re
duced rate until the geomancers em
ployed by the relatives of the dead

corpse shall be burled. Silk or paper
lanterns and Imitation fruit are hung
from the roof; there are screens In each
room between the door and the coffin:

earth are placed on no altar before the
