The mo3t fashionable audience of
the seasoii witnessed Paul Gilmore
in "The Mummy and the Humming
Bird" at the Academy of Music last
night. : . ' -I j; -j ,
The - play was well balanced and
everybody enjoyed it. It deals witn
the most sacred relationsmarriage
and the greatest impelling force in
life love. As a. play "The Mummy
and the Humming Bird'' is a lesson;
a study in human nature, the differ
ences In man's and woman's nature
and should be invariably observed or
digested.

wife of a wealthy Londoner, accus

confuse and yields to her admira
tion for the clever foreigner, whom
she thinks is capable of giving her
happiness. The husband fllea in
pursuit and traces her to the rooms
of the villian, but outwits him. . In
the last act the climax la reached.
She runs away, ; thinking she has
brought degredation upon herself and
family, but not so. He again pursues
and finds her heart-broken, in her
rooms in Paris. -An understanding
is the conclusion. The yllllan has
brought punishment upon himself and
oau oegmmng ends well. ?.
It would be a hard matter for Paul
Oilmore to Improve. He la surround
ed with a "well balanced cast, wnu
were entirely capable of supportinK
the star. The company is altogether
a new one; only one member pas with

grinder, and he was 'quite a favome
with the audience.
ir. uumore was at his best. He
is a great actor and suitably termed
"the clever young American, actor."
He is perfectly at ease on the state
and would be out of place anywhere
else. . . ,
Paul Gilmore plays the, part of the
nusDana witn a poise and reatrnlnr
that are admirable. H? does nor n.
first altogether realize one's con-en
tion of a scientific recluse, and this
renders 'somewhat less - effective the
contrasts of , his awakeninsr. Bin
when the man comes cut of his shell
and grasps firmly the levers that con
trol the course of events. Mr. Gll-
more'B acting leaves little to ba do-
sired. He Is Rtroni? and moifri

when . necessary,' gentle and tender at
other crises. His voice Is expressive,
his carriage graceful and his manner
pleasing, in the first scene with the
organ-grfnder he exhibits some talent
for the lighter comedy touches.
RIda Johnson Young, the famous
playwright, is preparing Mr. Gilmore's
play for next season. It will be call
