Ten thousand dollars are annually
leaving La Grande for hot house veg
etables and flowers that might as well
be" kept at home, according to Mana
ger S. M. Slough of the La Gvfind-3
Commercial club. He base3 the esti
mate on a careful compilation of 1'g
ures obtained from merchants and oth
er sources. The sum named is very
conservative, the figure actually av
eraging more than that. With thes;
figures at his command, Mr. Slough
has written to various cities where he
is advised people are looking for op
portunities to invest money and has
feet out the conditions as they exist
here. While he has not had time to
receive r.ny replies, he has hopes of
getting in touch with parties who will
take the matter up.
Along this same line Mr. Slough has
written letters to possible investors
regarding the establishment of a small
sash and door factory here. While In
North Powder a few days ago lu
learned that a mill there Is sending a
large shipment of odds and ends of
lumber and edgings to Oshkosh, Wis
consin, and that there it. is glued to
gether and made into furniture, sash

bute the finished product in could be

then be profitable to all concerned.
Pretty much the same thing Is true
of the cabbage crop. The heads are

Robert Friedles, a resident of Grouse,
North Wallowa county, was convicted
j last evening of the crime of rape, the
.jury having been cut for a consider
; able lengrh of time. The case was ex
trendy hard fought and though the
. defense turned In an 11th hour sur
prise on' the state, the jury found
for the state. The defendant's coun
sel brought many witnesses to En
terprise from Grouse to attack the
character of the woman involved and
with no possible chance to put on con
tradictory evide.nce because witnesses
were 80 miles away, the state depend
ed entirely on breaking down evidence
iu cross examinations. In this Colo
nel Ivanhoe was successful.
