T costs $1,000 spmetimes for
a skeptical person to learn
that a bank is a safer de
pository, for money than a hand

lady recently to learn this bit
ter lesson .. .. ..
An enterprising burglar who was aware of her
foolish distrust of banks watched his opportunity
and the money was gone. The savings of almost
a lifetime were lost merely because of the, fool
ish fear thai the bank would break. Think of the
millions and millions of dollarsnlbanks every
day and night and the loss by the breaking of a
the Union merchant and has been
keeping in touch with La Grande for
some time, being well satisfied with its
rapid development and bright future.

let' Immediately after June 22. The
postofflce department at Washington
today authorized the Observer to pub

and these will be opened on June 22.
At that time the bids will be let and
though government wheels move slow

month of July. In Buch an event the
building will be completed and ready
for occupancy along in the fall some

Twenty-Twe Blocks of BltnllthJe Or
dered by the CouaelL .
- Albanyj . Oregon, May .1. The city
council last night passed ordinances
ordering the construction of about 22
blocks of bltulithlc pavement. The
work will commence Immediately and
be finished promptly.' 5 ' ' ' '
A special committee appointed by
the council baa Just returned from a
trip'of Inspection to determine the
merits of various pavement used, and
especially that of concrete the latter
being claimed by some of our citizens
to be cheaper than bltulithlc. In view
of the committee's adverse finding?
concerning concrete the council pro
ceeded to continue their policy of lay
ing bltulithlc, which has been in
vogue here and very popular for flv
years. .
The supporters of concrete are now
thoroughly satisfied , that . concrete
pavement, even though cheap, is not
a good investment. ;
