THE DIRT STREETS.
Everyone admires paving and re
joices to see It being laid, but do not
forget that tor several years yet to
come La Grande will bave more mile
age of dirt streets than she can pos
elbly have In paving. It is therefore
very important that the dirt streets
be looked after and improved. At pres
ent tbey are In miserable condition

systematic street work done lipon

when one does not notice the fearful

THE FISHERMAN' EDITOR.
Sloan P. Shutt. the flslurman editor
from Joseph, was in La Grande . last
night on his way to Portland where he
and Mrs. Shutt will remain for several
days. Editor Shutt is a character, the
likes of which are scarce. Daily pa
per life does not appeal to htm for he
has grown past It. Life In a hustling
city with Its din and hurrah are ob
noxious because he says be wants to
live longer than most men live. And
he is right in this, for the hurry gets
the bist of men. '
' He is situated at the lake town
with a good spicy weekly newspaper,
happy In his eurroundln" and con
tented in the fact that Joseph Is
s-rowine which it is. Three days in !
the week are devoted to work and the
other three to sport. Shutt Is recog
nized as the most scientific angler in
Wallowa county, except the mayor of
Wallowa to whom every fisherman, in
Eastern Oregon must bare his head.
But Shutt has gotten far enough, along
in this fisherman science to throw
back ft fish that does not suit him, and
they have to be pretty well rounded
out to suit Of Irish decent, and close
at that, he grinds out good reading
to his people and keeps himself while
on dut looking like a congressman.
When the boys on the dailies are bro
ken .in spirit and in body, when the

cause of the fishing pole and the sup
erb surroundings for It that Wallowa
county offers.

known attorneys to cry before a Jury
and occasionally will blaspheme, but
never yet have we heard a lawyer sing

to be, added to the law' schools now
to make them complete.
The Oregonlan seems' to be boom
ing Roosevelt ' for another term as
president almost as bard as did Jona
than try the same tame when Taft
was nominated.

of time paid for. Old subscribers as well as new, by paying arrears or by
paying In advance or by paying- both in advance and

venience of those who wish to vote on account of a payment on sub
scription in favor of a canddlate is printed herewith, also a schedule of vot
ing power of subscriptions. ' . .
Whether in advance or in arrears payments on the La Grande Evening
Observer for moro than one year give a premium of 3.000 extra votes for
each year so paid; on the Weekly Observer a premium of 1,000 extra votes
for each year bo paid. The premium is the same whether the- subscrlbr is
. new or old. The 3,000 votes for each extra year paid on the Evening Observer
