Wash, April ,8 (Special)-The 1.1th
annual debating and track' meet, on
invitation of Whitman college will be
held on Friday and Saturday, May
5th and 6th, the declamation contest
taking place upon the evening of the
first day. Invitations have been sent
to the leading high schools of the in
land empire including Boise, Lewis
ton, Wallace and Weiser of Idaho;
The Dalles, Pendleton, La Grande and
Baker City of Oregon; and Colfax,
Dayton, Davenport, Ellensburg, Gar
field, North Yakima, Oakesdale, Pal
ouse, Pomeroy. : Prosser. RIchvllle,

Cars to be Entered from Union County
If Plans on Foot Mature. -
Baker. April 8. (Special) "They-re
off." That is the big shout that will
be heard at th; big auto race meet
which is to be held in Baker, probably
the latter part of this month or the
first of May. Local auto owners are
backing the meeet and It promises to
draw entrants from all parts of East
ern Oregon. The meet will last two
days and there will be something
doing all the time.
Local auto owners are enthusiastic
over the meet and no doubt there will
be a large number of entrants for all
events. The races will be' divided
into classes, according to the power
of the cars. There are to be novelty
races, straightaway contests, and races
against time. There will also be mo
torcycle and btcycle races.
In many of the races the contest
ants will ' run one at a time, either
running a specified distance or for a
certain length of time. But the
thrillers will be scratch contests be
tween experienced drivers in which
they will start side by side and fight
to the fiulsh. ' In other races cars
will be started an equal distance
apart and the excitement will be to
see which ear will gain on the other.
Those who have witnessed automobile
races say they are much more exciting
than horse races.
The local auto enthusiasts are also
planning on arganizlnc an automobile
club for their mutual benefit. It la

There are now about 45 cars In and
around Baker. Owners of buzz wa
gons in La Grande, Union, valley points
and as far east as Ontario. It is esti
mates' that there will be from 200 to
500 autos here for the meet, besideds
the visitors who will come for the

Harry Zurbrick, of the La Grande

! to the ranks of motorcycle fans. He
received an Indian through the Ditte
brandt agency this week. High class
motorcycles are proving popular and
