Clenning up much of t'ae hang-over
business and turning over affairs to
the new city council the retiring coun
cil met in special session last Sat
urday night. To kill the popcorn or
dinance was the first matter tran
sacted and the proposition of collect
ing assessments against Bronertv
owners on avenues where macadam
work and bitulithlc paving has been
done, came up for considerable atten
tion. It was found on investigation
that may have not paid their assess
ments or commenced Installments and
the chief of police was ordered to col
lect these assessments at once, using
the power of the city charter to aid
him. The charter provides that the
city may file a lien on such property
and that is what is to be done In this
case.
There was little ado over the trans
fer of councilmen. Councilman Flnley
was not present but Councilmen-elect
Claude Mackey of the second -ward
and Councilman-elect E. C. Davis of
the first ward were escorted to their
seats by Councilmen Orvis and Dunn.
Just before the transfer however, re
tiring President of the Council W, N.
Monroe thanked the council for co
operation and assistance given in all
committee and council deliberations
as a whole. The election of W. J.
Church ended the work of the newly
seated council for the evening.
Mayor Richardson, who presided,
announced the personnel of the new
committees and they are listed above.
The three men to leave the council
are A. V. Andrews of the second ward
who perhaps more than any other
man is responsible for the commence
ment of paving and permanent street
Improvements; W. N. Monroe and
John Sheak of the fourth ward.
