uation In this city, F. M Goodman of
Baker spent Sunday here discussing
the situation and outlining what Ba
ker Is willing to do. Chief among the
announcements coming from Baker
this year, is the decision of the Com
mercial cttb to get behind and support
the team, meaning that the Baker ag
gregation will be handled on a plan
very new to Baker. A man v:rsed in
baseball and a stranger, comparative
ly, to Baker, will manage the players
but the Commercial club U going to
give business prestige to thj club. The
Bakerites are In harmony with the
policy of local business men outlined
last' Saturday evening In the Observer,
nam lv that they want forfeits placed
by each club and that the management
of the team be done by substantia'
business men or by. the commercial
club. Baker has perhaps Introduced a
new pr; cedent by having the commer
cial club at the" head, takinr all re
sponsibility of finances, and encourag
ed by the decision of the Baker boost
ers local baseball fans hone to reach
an agre-ment similar In many reaoects
with the Baker proposition, with the
local commercial club.' This will be
taken tip at the first meeting of the
directors.
Mr. Goodman advances Huntington
as the fi!ir"i club, claiming that Ba
ker, Hunthr.ton, Union and La Grande
would mak; a much less expensive
quartet. Mr. Goodman pointed out that

ingmen to play baseball is for them

The Baker booster returned home
this morning with indication in La
Grande and predicts a fine four-club

assembled in La Grande yesterday to
attend the quarterly conference held
at the church and to hear prominent
churchmen from S altLake.
President Lyman of the 12 apostles
and Frank McMurran, one of the sev
en presidents of the Seventies, both
of Salt Lake, were In attendance dur
ing the stake conference. Not only
w.re the meetings large attended but
several Interesting addresses were de
livered and routine reports made.

term have been completed and late
Saturday night the Jurors were excus
ed after making- their final report,
which was as follows:
To the Hon. J. W. Knowles, Judge
of the Circuit Court for Union County
State of Oregon:-
We. the undersigned grand Jury
Jiereby make a report of our findings
as a grand Jury of said county and
state, for the date of our selection,
until the present time.
We have been In session for six
days, and have returned Into court
nine true, bills of Indictment, and two
not true bills of Indictment.
We have fully and carefully lnves
'sated all matters that have come to
our attention, and disposed of them
as instruted by your honor.
We have visited the various county
offices, and from all w? could discov
er, the offices and nubile records are
woll and properly kept, and all offi
cials courteous and attentive to their
duties.
We recommend that the west side
of the Jail be supplied with a suffl-
r'nit number of steel bunks, for the
accomodation of Inmates, of the same
chnncter as the bunks now 'n use on
th east side of the county Jail.
We recommend that a .fire proof
door or outer covering for the. win-
flows to the vaults opening off the of
flee of the recorder of conveyances,
be immediately supplied and put. up
In order to secure the records kept

La Grande, Or., s claimed to do the
work. Mr. Stephen' former home was
In La Grande, wh:re he was a railroad
man. Friday afternoon, at the east enfl
of the Morrison rreet bridge he and
Blair pave a test o" their nrosnectlng
machine, which costs to build $250.
Black sand, which contained besld s
sold, several nuggets, was poured Into
the hopper, and after passing over the
"riffles" no water being used, the fin?
gold appeared In one place and the
nuets In another. The concentrates
and black sands were separated from
the debris. ;
A full sized machine Is two by seven
feet, and the two men cllm it will
handle five tons of sand ner hour, or
more, and save 90 per cent of the gold,
concentrates, platinum and black sand
The first machine of the company will
be niaced on it? own ground In Cali
fornia? which will run. It 1s estimated
from tests made, about $2 per yard.
Mr. Blair says the company can make
dividends on trround that runs only 50
cents to the yard.
Mr. Blair, who has Just returned
from Arizona and California, has se
cured thousands of acres of placer
ground for his company, as well as a
concession from the Mexican govern
ment for a large tract of ground in
the "Baja" district of Lower Califor
nia. It is estimated that the latter
ground will average $2 to the yard.
