NEXT to CITY HALL 1 . Washington. March 8. Responsibil ity for the plague which has already I caused the death of thousands In China , and Manchuria, has been placed upon ; Httle animal closely resembling the ;Amercan woodchuck, by experts who , hare been studying the sources of the iAAItBMA This Chinese woodchuck has long been known as subject to the plague, the infection being transmitted by the j fleaa always present u the bodies ot , the animals. From them, It was com j municated to trappers in eastern Mon golia, and thence spread throughout all Manchuria. Had it not been for the mercenary in the make-up of the Chinese over coming religious scruples, the plague wouldnot now be ravaging the popu lous coast regions, in' the past, the Chinese would not kill the animal, which they -call "han te ah," for supsr stitious and religious reasons. The an jlmals live in burrows, In colonies of I about 50 tach, and their habits resein j ble those of the American prairie dog. The Chinese say that when the anirt&l is about to leave Its burrow, and sus pects ah enemy njarby It emits a sound like "pu p'ah, pu p'ah,w meaning "ro fear, no fear,' and then returns Into is hole. The Chinese also say that w'an n tripper In nhoiit n vn; ; jjyj --zl-chucks in his trap, the animal ern't? the same sound, and it was this appar ently uncanny, phenomenon which In spired the Chinese With fear of ths animal. , In thelast two y:ars; however, their superstitions have been overcome bv the high price of marmot skins. The number of trappers has increased from practically none at all to. t:n thousand this year, This year the trappers brought the skins to Harbin, and undoubtedly brought the plague Infections, trans mitted from the fleas infesting the ani mals with them. From Harbin, after selling their ,catch, many took trips to the south,, and thus the plague was spread from Harbin to the seacoast. LIMBER INSPECTOR HERE. Goto to . Baker. Just Completed It Carries a Mammoth Stock of Merchandise . C 'V-., '. 7 -.;:..".;'. "We are adding what we believe is the greatest bargain department ever installed in a department store of Eas tern Oregon." remarked John Col lier, manager of the Peopls store, last evenipg to a reporter for the Eve ning Observer, and with that he. led the way to the newly equipped base ment where new lumber and fresh paint told Ihe story of remodeling. Turning on the electric lights a-long line of counters was to b;; seen car rying its load of merchandise. Inves tigation showed that several thousand dollars worth of goods has been con signed to the basement bargain de partment of th:' People's store. The buyer for this' establishment whs able to pick up several remark able wholesale bargains and when the goods arrived It forced th installa tion of the hssamont for toi. room on the flret floor to take care ot the surplus stock. When asked If this department was to be a permanent feature of th; Peol pie's store both Mr. Collier and Mr. Clemens were positive in their state ments' that It would be. Almost every month In the year theire is something to be found In the merchandizing world provided a store has room to take care of these particular purchas es. In view of this fact th:1. People's store will make their,, basement the bargain bazaar, where ladies cango and .ransack the remnant counter, and delve deep into the pile of embroider ies, pick' out a shoe that suits from a broken line of sizes and in fact, take their time In hunting the good'things that afe always to be found among the basement merchandise. The opening of the basement to the public will occur, wlthin-a- few days. Y FINAL ACCOUNT.
