WILL FINISH HOSPITAL
rtaier Has Plans for Completing Bis
Instltotton at Nearby Date j
- At last It seems that Immediate
eteps are to be taken for the entire
completion of the new St. Elizabeth
Hospital, the foundation of which
were completed some time ago, stys
the Baker Democrat. The Mother Gen
eral of the society In Philadelphia is
In Baker to confer with the lecaj neo
j lo In regard to the matter, and Indi
cations are that some definite results
will be accomplished by her visit
She states that the hospital Is rc
cgnlzed as a crying need and. that
there has never been any (juestlon,
but what the building would be com
pleted by some means or other in the
near future. The eastern head of the
society believes that Baker Is fhe
logical place for the establishment of
a hospital, which Is grevly '.ceded
In this section of the staU t , tho
present time, and that such need Is
constantly Increasing.
The Mother General has taken the
matter up with the authorities here
and the. commercial club lias appoint
ed a committee to confer with the
Baker county medical soc1et;
The latter body has, never for a
moment lost sight of the Importance
of action In the matter and seldom is
a meeting held but what the subject
comes up for discussion. Tn fact the
members have long been formulating
plans to assist In the early comple
tion of the building in ever way pos
sible. . '
A joint committee of representatives
of the medical profession and the
commerr!! dub will confer with the
Mother Orneral in a day o two, and
It Is believed that some "nans will
at that time be formulated, that will
rpsult In arrangements being con-
sumnted for the completion of the
structure. . 1 ,

At the gathering of the faithful fans
in the Commercial association rooms
last night, J. Roy Raley was elected
president of the Pendleton' club ot
the Blue Mountain league and the fol
lowing men were chosen for the other
positions: Henry Collins for vice pres
ident, John Dickson for secretary and
Fred Lampkin for treasurer These
officers will hold a meeting tonight
to select a manager for the team, and
common report has It that Mark Nel
son will be ihe favored one. '
Considerable discussion relative to
the' coming season was held but no
other action 'was taken. The senti
ment as expressed at the meeting was
"f ry optimistic! for a pennant winning
team. A number of the players of
last year's team were present and sig
nified their intention of turning out
for practice within a few days.
The schedule has not yet been
"rawn up as President Frazle and
Secretary Cooley of the league are
fxp'Tlendng some difficulty in ar
ranging the games so that each end
of the county will have one each Sun
day Pendleton East Oregonlan.
. Alfalfa Root Man Found.
F. J. Thomas of this place has dis
covered that the alfalfa root Is equal
ly as nourishing for man as for beast
and not only nourishing but it makes
a delicious dish when properly served,
says a Ilermlston report.
Mr. Thomas recently turned und.r i
fUld of alfalfa and later when discing
the ground found the roots had nut
n.r new shoots, white and tender.
Onthevlnr n bunch of them, hp vpsh
pd them and looke,l up a cook book on

followed. Retng a little timid, Mr.
Thonns tried out the new dish onthe
hired man to the latter's ienornnce
of what it really'waa. He pronouncd
It fine and inquired what it was. Mr.
Thomas thon took courage and samp-
'pd it himself. All this occurred but
one short week ago, and yet a five
acre tract has been dug over twice.
