dentally Fell Into Trap.
Pendleton, Feb. 8 (Special) Mrs.
Ada Payne of La Grande has been
thrown into undesirable situations and
has been incorrectly placed in a com
promising position by rumors and
newspaper reports published in this
city and surrounding towns, Accord
ing to friends of the family who have
golne Into the matter and found that
Mrs. Payne was the unfortunate victim
of circumstances.
When Mrs. Payne and her sister,
Mrs. Heathman went to th,? hotel
where the recent scnndal was un
eartlier, It was for the purpose of cal
ling on the Gibson girl, who It Is al
leged had become prominent In some
