Providing a way so that the person
making application for a loan need
not , own real estate, and In
volving six months' grace in the
payment of monthly installments, the
Standard Real Estate Co. (Inc.) of
Dallas, Texas, has opened a branch of
fice with the Phy Real Estate company
and W. P, Medders their agent is now
introducing his plans to the La Grande
people. The chief points in the firm's
manner of business is that no real es
tate deed is required to secure the loan
at the beginning.' V
On the basis of $1,000 the applicant
pays $6 for application and then f 6 a
month for six months, or some times
up to 12 months, making) 78. if he
has paid in for a year. The company
deducts (24 for expenses of placing
the loan and adds $1.08 as interest on
the investment. During the six, eight
or more than 12 months required to
mature the contract, ' the applicant
names any place of real estate which
he Intends to purchase or can purch
ase, and a loan of (1,000 Is placed in
the bank where it can be checked
upon to first pay the real estate so
that the appltcant can set a deed to
i the property and apply it as security
for the loan, and then check out for
building the home, the original $55.08

CHECK ARTIST ARRESTED
Xunln Arrests Man at Minam Who
Passed bad Checks.
Sheriff Marvin went to Mnam Sun
day and arrested one Frank MayB,
accused of passing bad checks. He
was brought up on the afternoon
train and lodged in Jail.
Mays has been working In various
logging, camps and coming to Wal
lowa fon his sprees, In the course of
which the bad paper was given. He
is alleged to have induced A. J. Pipes
to cash two checks, and Wolfe Bros ,
cne check, all amounting. to. S35. The
postmaster at Mlnam "also cashed two
for $10 each. -
. Three of the checks were on the
"Laldlow Savings Bank and Trust
Company" and two o a Minnesota
bank. The checks were signed F. H.

Coming up on the train Sunday,
ih man told Sheriff Marvin that his
name w,as Frank Mays. Afterwards
he said F. H. Marlon , was his wife's
rame and that he was authorized to
sign her name. - V .

merchants, R. E. Smith, senior mem
ber of the firm of Smith & Greene,
shoe dealers -on Depot street, complet
ed a transfer this morning whereby
L. J. French, a prominent young bus
iness man of Dodge City, Kansas,
takes over the extensive business,
of the Smith & Greene firm, D. Greene,
one of the best shoe salesmen in the
city, a man who has had years of ex
perience In , the business,' stays with
the new firm so that the patrons and
Customers .of that popular shoe em
porium will find familiar faces within
the place of business hereafter as
before. The new proprietor is a man
well versed in the shoe business and
comes to La Grande with the very best
recommendations.' Mr. French Is one
of the. best known and high ' de
gree Masons in Kansas. His business
career in Dodge City is attested to as
the very best by scores of recommen
dations from his home state. '
With the arrival of a new man in
business in this city, La Grande also
