Dissatisfied With Bureau Figures and
; Decides to Count for Itself.
The Dalles, -dissatisfied with the
count sent out by the census bureau
has taken steps to ascertain the cor
rect, count and a committee of com
petent business men Is delng the work.
The following from The Dalles paper;
The local census recount Is on In
full blast, : Secretary Judd S. Finn
of , the Business Men's association,
under whose direction the enumera
tion is being made,' having raised the
necessary funds and appointed J. M.
Patterson! J, E. Barnett, F. P. Phil
lips and A. A.vBrown to do the work.
The four men commenced counting
Dalles citizens yesterday morning
and expect to finish in 10 days or two
weeks. .- ;.;-' :
Messrs. Potterson and Phillips will
count the people of the ity west of
Washington street, the former taking
that part north of Fourth street and
the latter the south side. Mr. Barnett
has that portion of the eastern divis
ion which Is north of Alvord Btreet.
Mr. Brown's territory being that south
of Alvord. ' ." .
These men thoroughly understand
the city, all its nooks and corners, and
are most capable of determining the
real population of The Dalles. Local
people should do everything In their
power to anal r,n:;ritiri "uu
should accept, their figures , as being
correct, wnetner or not they show The
Dalles to have more than 4880. the
population announced by the govern
ment It Is almost certain that the lo
cal people will find that there are more
people, here. However, there is a pos-
slbilltythat those, who think there
are at least 6,000 citizens In this city
are wrong. '
The enumerators will not gather the
statistics asked for by the government
as they have
Hills
counters, merely ascertaining the
names of the hends of families, the
number In each family, and the names
of the single men, together with their
addresses. - ' ,
