Tonight when the clock strikes
twelve another year will have been
born. Welcome, yes a glad welcome
to anything that has been born, and
espesially a new year. Dut in that
welcoming let us not forget to take
one long look at the bridge which has
carried us over safely the year of
1910 just closing.
What a magnificent year It has been
for La Grande and the Orande Rondo
valley. In all history since white
men first struck plow in this fertile
soil no single year has brought such
glorious results.
The Observer, this evening, Is else
where giving a resume of some of the
commercial resources which will
itartb? even .those who daily live in
the midst of such a rich country. Our
own people are not aware of many
of the most potent features that cause
the Grande Ronde valley to be known
everywhere .as the storehouse of the
northwest. We are not mindful of
the immense tonnage that has been
shipped from this section the past
year. We pass by each day without
giving due consideration to the fruit
industry which is yet In Its infancy;
without considering that the Grande
Ronde hog is the staple pork on the
Portland market; without stopping to
figure what the wheat crop brings
into this valley each year In dollars
and cents; without estimating the tre
mendous amount of money paid out
( monthly by our different enterprises.

piled what we believe to be, accurate
statement for your consideration.
Read them 'carefully, commit them to
memory and the (first home seeker
you see, grab him and repeat the
whole story in his ear. The effect
will be marvelous, why? Because no
other section of the country can show
such a statement of varied industries
and the remarkable success of each.
It Is a story that should be repeated
to the children, taught in the schools
and Sunday Schools a story that
should not waste Its fragrance on the
zephyrs of a valley whore the crops
were produced, but it should be her
alded to the four corners of the home
seeking world.
As you hold your watch meetings
tonight; as you engage In the worship
of your chosen religion, do not forget
there is a religion of fact in this val
ley that also needs your attention. It
needs nothing but repeating. Every
word of it is legend the truth Is in
it and therefore it can and will stand.
When the last gong has been sound
ed and you realize that grand old
prosperous 1910 has gone and the new
1911 is upon us filled with youth and
energy, take that energetic youth by
the arm and show it over La Grande's
paved district; show it the other mu
nicipal improvements; pull aside that
curtain and let the youngster peer
Into the Grande Ronde valley where
production Is unsurpassed, and then
say to It, "Behold what the fleeting
year has done for us, may we expect
as much or more of you?" The answer
will be yes, for with proper energy
the year just dawning will prove to
be even greater to La Grande and the
valley than the one closing.

Is hereby given that In pursuance of a
resolution adopted by the Common
Council of the City of La Grande, Or
egon, on the 2l8t day. of Dec., 1910,
creating Improvement District No. 29,
and designating "X" avenue as such
district, and in pursuance of a resolu
' ' ted by said Common Council
lay of Dec, 1910, whereby
said Council determined and declared
Its Intention to improve all that por
tion of "X" avenue in said Improve
ment district as hereinafter described
by laying thereon Board Sidewalk, the
Council will, ten days after the ser
vice of this notice upon the owners
of the property affected and benefitted
by such improvement order that said
above described improvement be
made; that boundaries of said district
to be so improved are as follows:
All that portion of "X", avenue from
the west curb line of Second Street,
to the east curb line of First street.
Notice la hereby further given that the
Council will levy a special assess
ment on all the property affected and
benefitted by such Improvement for
the purpose of paying for such im
provement. That the estimated cost
of such- Improvement is the sum of
$66.00. That the Council will on the
18th day of January, 1911, meet at the
Council chamber at the hour of 8
o'clock P. M., to consider said esti
mated cost and the levy of said assess
ment, when a hearing will he granted
to any person feeling aggrieved by
such assessment.
