Even If Fourth street is torn up for
the winter and traffic on that thor
oughfare for several blocks is not
permitted, the (people residing in that
part of the city have no complaint for
they realize In tho springtime the
steam roller will' mash down all the
trouble spots and the street will be
coated with the hard surface pave
ment. '-' ;'-
This Is the first winter. La Grande
has ever experienced since she po-
sessed paved streets and the pleasure
of the inhabitants over the improve
ment is worth the price It cost. When
the city council decided that pave
ment should be laid in the business
district there occurred the usual crit
icism from a small per cent of the
people. Now that the paving Is show
ing its merits not a word of anything
but strongest praise Is beard, i The
pavement selected Is bitullthic. The
work was done by the Warren Con
struction Company.; ; . r
In former winter Beasons when even
on Adams avenue it was hard to haul
a load, on-principal residence streets
where a delivery wagon could scarce
ly get through the mud, now the clat
ter of the, horses hoofB on the pave
ment Is really sweet music to the ear
of every property owner In La Grande.
; The comparison of paved and un
paved districts this season is so mark
ed that it will be no surprise If La
Grande continues to pave until almost
the entire residence portion is hard
surfaced. , v. ; ;
Property : owners, who at ' first
thought the expense was not Justified,
are so completely satisfied that valua
tions on property have Increased with
the addition of paving, that It is not
longer looked upon
as 'an expense,
but as an Investment instead
That the city : used wisdom . in the
kind of pavement selected there is no
doubt, for It stands the test and makes
good under all weather conditions a
thing which means life to pavement.
When a street Is, once paved with bit
ullthic It fs evident that the improve
ment Is permanent, for the company
will not permit inferior work to go
down. s This was demonstrated at
Fourth street and Adams avenue at
which place for some reason the mix
ture was not up to the standard. When
the company's inspector came along
and viewed the work he ordered it re
laid. This order caused a great deal
of extra work for, the surface had to
be chinned off down to the crushed
rock and a complete new ton laid
What improvements La Grande is
making at the nresent time are made
,wlth the Intention of standing for the
next generation. Her pavements at
lenst, promise' well to make good for
use of the youngsters who are yet to
come. i
