When the National . Wool Growers'
Association meets in Portland next
month In annual convention, the ses
sion will resemble a consultation of
physicians over a complicated case.
The problem to be solved is how. to
keep the next congress from making
a Jig saw puzzle out of Schedule K,
which Is in grave danger, its friends
fear, of being cut to pieces when the
Democrats get In control of the next
House. ,
This will be the dominant topic of
the convention beyond a doubt. No
less than 6,000 sheep raisers from all
parts of the country will be in at
tendance and there will be many a
discussion over the threatened tariff
changes as they affect the wool men.
President Fred W. Gooding of the
National Association, In discussing'
matters that will engage, the atten
tion of the delegates when they meet
in convention said:
"One of our chief concerns as fol
lowers of the. oldest line of husband
ry of which history speaks is the as
sault that has recently been so per
sistently, made upon the .wool and
woolens schedules in the Payne-Aid-rich
tariff law. Discussions t,hat will,
be held in the convention will be edu
cational. Not only is the general pub
lic almost entirely , uninformed, or
rather misinformed, in regard to the
merits of the tariff rates on wool, and
woolens, but I believe that a ' very
large majority jot the wool growers
themeselves have but little idea of
the importance of the subject
"If through the discussions that
will be held in the convention, noth
ing , more is accomplished than the
removal of the prejudices that have
been engendered by the muck-rakers
In the magazines, and the mudslingers
on the political hustlings against the
wool growers and woolen manufac
turers, the convention will have been
well worth hearing."
