' It is said that In ancient church pariah of Newark, near London, a curious custom prevails of ringing, at an unwonted hour of the night, all the church bells. This is done so violent ly on each Sunday night of the months of October and November. It orlglnat- ed thus: In the reign of Queen Eliza beth a rich merchant named Gofer was one October night lost In the dense woods then surrounding Newark.' He had a large sum of money on his per- son and the forest was Infested with thieves.
