Spokane Apple Show Will Have Per
. manent Grounds.
Spokane, Wash., Nov. 18 (Special)
E. F. Cartier Van DisBel, second vice
president and chairman of the board
of thrustees of the third National Ap
ple show, announced today that How
ard Ellfott president and Ren H. Rice
secretary and manager of the organi
zation will be Invited to continue In
their present offices for another year
at the annual meeting in January,
adding also that Spokane will have
the fourth annual competition ex
position in 1911.
"We shall have to have larger quar
ters for the next show," Mr. Van Dis
Bel said, "and It is not unlikely that
a coliseum will be erected. This could
also serve for national and state con
ventions and other large gatherings,
horse shows and other functions
which require more room than Is now
available.
"Our exposition space is a matter
of more than three and a half acres
this year, but we were not able to
accommodate all the exhibits that
could have been obtained this year. As
it Is we have 30 carloads, Including 19
straight cars, and the exhibition eas
ily is the largest of its kind that has
ever been put together anywhere.
"The show thisyear is a greater
success than last year, which was far
ahead of the first exposition in 1908,
end if the plans now In making go
through the 1911 show will be as far
ahead of the present one as this
week's ' exhibition leads the one in
1908."
C. M. Faasett, secretary of the Spo
kane chamber of commerce gave out
this statement today:
"The apple show, which is of so
much benefit to the entire northwest,
should be provided with a permanent
building. There is no doubt that the
trustees of the chamber of commerce
will solve the problem when it is
brought before them."
MYSTERY IN PENDLETON.
Man Disnpiwars and Alarm Felt That
He Met With Foul Play.
Pendleton, Nov. 18 A local paper
said yesterday:
Has Al. Todd been murdered?
Or has Al. Todd simply disappeared
with his pay and left townt
These are the problems that now
face Chief of Police Burdane:
Al. Todd is a plumber and two
weeks ago was employed by Sheron
and Eddlngs.
Last night Councilman Sheron, a
member of the firm reported his em
ployee had drawn his pay and then
mysteriously disappeared Into thin
sir.
Added to the mystery is the fact that
he was last 6een on the levee near
Water street with a pair of dissolute
characters. All three were busily en
gaged In conversation.
The conversation was held close to
the May lodging house and was dur
ing the day of November 3.
Since that time Todd has disap
peared. Evidence showing that the disap
pearance of Todd was not deliberate

baby girl was born Saturday morn

Quite a good many farmers of

Mr. and Mrs. Laurence Drumsmith
have removed from La Grande back to
their mountain home in Upper Ladd
Canyon. Mts. Drumsmith has been 111
ever since they went to La Grande and
that is the reason of their "moving
back again.
Rex Conaway has moved on the old
Gates farm by the school house, in
j order to have his oldest child in school
this winter.
Quite a number of the scholars have
been absent from school the past
week or two on account of sickness,
supposed to be lagrlppe, as all are
affected with the same symptoms.
Mrs. Henry Peebler has been In
La Grande since the news of her
brother, Will Synhorst's death.
