Governor W. R. Stubbs of Kansas
paid his own expenses to St, Lou's to
inform the voters that prohibition
does prohibit In the state of Kansas
"Gentlemen," the governor said, "the
lives of bankers are' dependent upon
their integrity, but-: I tell you such
statements are mada here to the ef
fect that prohibitory laws are not en
forced in ray state are common lies."
The governor read -from a numbsr o"
letters from district Judges in Kan
sas sotting forth a decrease since the
prohibition laws became effective, and
the enforcement of the statute to the
letter. "The brewers tell . you that
more liquor is sold In dry territory
than ever before. Don't yon know
.that is a barefaced lie? Is there a sane
man in this whdle assemblage who be
lieves such a statement? Why, If that
statement were true, all the. brewers
In the country would strongly be In
favor of prohibition." He continued by
Baying that while liquor . was., sold
under license In his state, it was nec
essary to maintain - in Kansas City,
Kans., what is termed as a "garnish
ment" court, but since the prohibitory
law became effective, this court has
been absolutely done away with. "In
Justice to our state and in Justice to
the American people,' I have resound
ed to give the facta about the Opera
tion of the prohibition law ' in ' our
common wealth. I commenced with the
chief Justice of our state, Chief Jus
tice Johnson, and asked him what
his observation had been about keep
ing the law. I did the same thing
with the attorney general of the state,
and with nearly every one of the dis
trict Judges, also with the mayors of
25 of the largest cities of the Btate,
bIbo of the police Judges and the
chiefs of police. I was convinced that
the prohibitory law in Kansas is well
enforced as any other criminal law
on our statutes." He took up 'the
proposition of finance and showed by
strong proof that prohibition was an
aid to business. "Prohibition is the
best business asset Kansas ever had."
The people of St. Louis squirmed a
little when Governor "Stubbs made the
statement that the eleven Kansas
counties adjoining Missouri furnish
ed the Sunflower state fifty-three (53)
per cent of her criminals. This state
ment of the ; governor came with
great force to his hearers because it
was made by no sentimentalist but
by a hard-headed business man and
a practical statesman. ,
Governor Stubbs was elected two
years ago on a platform which had as
ita main plank the enforcement of the
prohibitory law. ;.
We feel as though the statements
made by Governor . Stubbs should be
known by the voters of Union county.
The speakers who spoke in the inter
est of the liquor people misrepres'
ented the conditions of the' state of
Kansas. No man la so qualified to
tell the people of this commonwealth
of the value or failure of the prohi
bitory law of his state than Gover
nor Stubbs. v ; '
It is well to keep In mind the state-
men of this broad-minded governor
and statesman when our ballot 1b cast

Better Late Than Not at All.
The pastor of the little country church
had been much annoyed by having the
members of his congregation straggle
In long after the service had begun.
One Sunday morning, when he felt that
further forbearance with this fault was
impossible, he decided to rebuke some
conspicuous offender. About twenty
minutes later than the proper hour
there entered a mild mannered little
woman,' one of the regular attendants
