The editor of the Observer nas a
faculty for getting things twisted. lie
speaks of Mr. McAlister's Idea of
arraying the country against the city.
I thought that that was the charge of
the Home Ruin Association. They
started the wall that the farmers have
no right to a voice In deciding the
matter of the control of the liquor
business In the county. I believe the
editor Is a member of the association
that is the father of that misshapen
thing. He seems to be a little ashan-
ed of it
Two years ago we were told that
if local option carried in the county
La Grande would be ruined, grass
would grow in our streets, houses
and store rooms would be vacant, no
building would be done, and all worts
of dire predictions were made. Now it
sounds funny to have a wet man
write about claims made for prohibi
tion. He was not here aol does nM
know what claims wer$ made. But it
is a fact that no honest mad can de
ny tfat ve dc not no-v have as vile
places In La Grande 11 we di1 before
we had Prohibition. And before the
near beer joints were licensed we had
; ' f " "
conditns were good as the pol
records will show. ' ' ' -
Another example of wet logic is
shown Jn the reference to the two
murder trials. Mr, McAllister's argu
ment, which' is unanswerable, is that
If the farmer is to have no voice In
the disposition ot, the liquor traffic
in La Grande which Is such a prolific
cause of crime, then he should have
no part in the payment of the taxes
which must meet those expenses. That
Is fair and Just Now the county Is
the unit In the matter of the criminal
laws In force throughout the county.
If the communities bad some privil
eges which were the cause of the
crimes committed then the argument
of the editor would be" germane. But
j great Is wet logic!
There Is either. Inexcusable Ignor
ance or contemptible and shameless
demagoguery exhibited In the speech
es of men and In the writing of others
about the search and Biezure provis
ion of the local option law. Robs
struck a dramatic attitude and de
clared something about his dead body
and any effort to enter bis home with
out due process of law. Well, he
ought, to know that the law requires
due process of law before any home

can he entered.. It is virtually the
same provision as the law about .stol
en goods. It. Is the same provision as
we now have in our prohibition law.
How many homes of our citizens fca v
been entered at midnight to search to;
HquorT How many apartments of out
wives and daughters have been rutb
lesslently entered by the heartless
officials in the last two years? These
speeches and these written harangues
and these posters are about as mean
and despicable as anything that can
be attempted. When ' men resort to
such things there cause la desperate.
Rose and Darrow do not agree. Rose
endeavored to show that-the liquor
traffic was a great financial asset in
the country. Darrow said that the liq
uor traffic was of no economic advan
tage to ..the country. I think Darrow
is much more of a political ecpnom's'
than Rose and he had the good sense
not .to undertake the impossible. Dar
row said he had only one objection
to prohibition. He thinks It Interferes
with a man's personal liberty, i
We all prize our liberty. But does
Prohibition Interfere with our liber
ty unduly or differently , than ' other
laws? Under regulation women are
not allowed In saloons. 'Their liberty
Is Interfered with. A man is not al
lowed to keep a bow and chickens In
some cities. His liberty is interfered
with A man is not allowed, to build a
frame structure In certain limits of
the city. His liberty is Interfered with.
A member of a'man't family Is strick
en with Bmallpox. A yellow flag is put
upt and the man Is not permitted to
leave his premises. .His liberty is In
terfered with. A thief is denied the
right to take ' things of value ' by
stealth. His personal liberty 1b Inter
fered with. So we might continue. It
1b really affecting to hear these men
split the air and see them swing their
arms and stamp their feet when they
reach the personal liberty part of the
program. Especially Is it so when
we remember the personal liberty they
are pleading for. It is the liberty to
pour booze down their throats, to
paint their noses red, to get blear
eyes, to make themselves In a 'condi
tion to go home and break up their
furniture, abuse their wives and
children, commit murder, become a
public charge, disgrace : themselves
and those who love them, and fill ' a
drunkard's grave and meet eternal
shame, for the good Book says that no
drunkard Shall inherit eternal life.
That' Is wonderful liberty for 'which
to storm about. Now the Supreme
Court of the United States and many
of the Supreme Courts of the states
have declared that prohibition does not
Interfere with any just rights of any
individual, and President Jordan says
we have the same rlghf to prohibit
saloons as we have to prohibit cess
pools. And so we may believe that pro-
j hibitlon will do no man an Injury. It
will enlarge the liberties of a host of
women and children, and men, too.
