DID THE SENATOR ME AS IT I
Since Senator Jonathan Bourne, Jr.,
has i been quoted recently as urging
republicans to' defeat Bowerman for
governor, many have been anxiously
awaiting an explanation of the state
ment in. the full belief that the senaT
tor had been misquoted. As yet noth
ing has been said to Indicate tlat he
had been.
Strong admirers of Senator Bourne
will refuse to agree with him In this.
There are many who would have sup
ported the senator for re-election If
he had not Injected this outlaw poll
tics, no matter how he believed nom!-

are not' so vital as. elections. But
these same men who would rather not
change senators every six years will
not feel like giving Bourne support
If he comes out for the democratic
ticket That Is adding too much weight
to the load, besides It Is contradictory
to every principle upon which Bourne
has stood upon. His whole slogan baa
been let the people decide all1 mat
ters. The people nominated Jay Bow
erman for governor In a fair and
square campaign, then why should not
i Senator Bourne, like everyone else,
support him?
We hope the senator has been mis
quoted and that he will say so, or If he
' has not been perhaps he will recon
sider the matter and take a stand for
his party nominee.
He will find that many men who
do not agree with some of his Ideas
' for nomination will support him for
re-election, for as we stated before,
this thing of changing senators and
, congressmen every term la not satis
factory. Many republicans can stand
difference of opinions as to how nomi
nations should be made, but they will
not stand for disloyalty to party
nominees.
OH, lOU-UNION.
Oh, yes, they all came today. Noth
ing to It, but success. Union Is here
today five hundred strong, and may
be more.- We counted five hundred
loyal souls from that city and theq
we, missed Billy Vogel, Bob Withy
combe, Editor Sclblrd and a few more
of the wheel horses whom we know
are sticking around some place help
ing to swell the crowd.
And it makes La Grande's old soul
feel proud of Union. Today Mao Wood,
John Collier, Will Church, . Fred
Gelbel and Fred Curry, along with
many other La Grande men are car
rying the smile that will not wear off.
They remember along last spring
