While the main bulk of Btreei im
provement on Adams, Depot and Fir
streets has not been assessed and the
property owners have not been re
quired to pay for any portion of the
paving work already accomplished,
the city officers are nevertheless get
ting a taste of what the Bancroft
plan is going to bring about One
block on East Adams avenue near Wil
low street has been assessed and the
property owners as a rule are adopt
ing the Bancroft method of ijaylag for
the work. While only one block 1b be
ing paid for at this time, It does, as
stated, Indicate what a voluminous
Amount of work is entailed lay the vast
amount of improvement under way.
It is presumed) that the other por
tion of, Adams avenue will be assessed
at the next meeting of council and
from then on there will be a con
stant stream of money coming in to
pay for the improvements already

vitation for next year's gathering.
To back up Tacoma's invitation,
Portland has sent telegrams to the
commercial bodies of the Coast cities
calling upon them to help bring the
convention to Tacoma and it is ex
pected that each will send messages J
to the Grand-Rapids gathering, urg
ing the delegates to come west next
year. .' . .
The telegrams weer sent out by the
Portland Commercial Club and signed
by Manager Chapman of the Promo
tion Committee and Manager Ray
mond of the Convention Bureau. The
messages were sent to every prom
inent commercial body on the Coast
from Los Angeles to Seattle. The mes
sages sent vary with the people ad
dressed but all ask , that . telegrams
be sent to;Grand Rajids, urging dele
gates to bring tae next convention to
Tacoma. " ; 1 .
Los Angeles endorsed Portland for
the next meeting place of the conven
tion but Tacoma had already laid her
plans for it and Portland gladly waiv
ed Its claim In favor of its' northern
neighbor. v
