fine federal buildings for Oregon cit
ies. . Been honored by being placed on
the ranking committee In the
House of Representatives Ways
' and Means. This is the first time
Oregon has ever had a place on
this great committee with the in
fluence it gives. .
Been a consistent friend of the
"old soldier" having supported ev
ery bill introduced in his behalf;
secured passage of many private
bills for very needy old veterans
and their widows; and bandied
many hundreds of different claims
for pensions which were acted on
by the pension bureau.

stood at or near the head in the
sums appropriated in the last
House bill for Its river and har
bors. ($1,800,000.)

Council Orders Cement Sidewalk
Construction at Elgin.
Elgin, Sept. 20 Special The bene
fit show given by the Cemetery Asso
ciation at the "Gem" last Thursday
night was a decided success. The pro
gram was exceptionally good, and
three shows were held, each one be
ing crowded to the limit. The pro
ceeds will go toward graveling the
walks and driveways of the cemetery.
R.' C. Mays and O. E. Ryder will have
charge of the work.
The heavy wind storm Friday even
ing put the Wallowa Co. toll line of
the Pacific Tel. and Tel. Co. out of
commission for several hours, about
one and one-half miles from town,
three poles were blown down and the
wires tangled. A trouble shooter was
sent out at once and shortly after bus
iness was again resumed.

merchant, arrived last week from New
Mexico on a business trip.

Twelve carloads of sheep and six car
loads of cattle left Wallowa Tuesday
for the outside markets. Five double
deck cars and three single-deck cars
of ftheep were shipped from Joseph
by C. F. Walker to Seattle markets.
They were purchased from Mr. Harts
horn. ' - .
Four cars of sheep were shipped to
Portland by N. C. Longfellow. Two
'cars of cattle from Enterprise were
shipped by Chandler & McKennon of
La Grande to Portland markets. Four
other cars of cattle were shipped by
Warren Chandler and Frank Graham
who purchase them from local stock
