Dr. Frederick Perry Noble takes a fall
out of theNjhristian Endeavorers in
an editorial In the Spokesman-Review,
declaring that their oriticlssra of Mrs.
Nicholas Longworth. charged with
smoking cigarettes, is unwarranted
and that such censorship Is an un-Am
erican and medieval institution, ad
ding: ,
"If Mrs. Longworth smokes It is no
body's affair in the world but' her
own not even her husband's. To r
quest her to stop Is to take for grant
ed two things that require to be prov
en. One Is that smoking by women
Is an evil. The other Is that the ex
ample of such a woman would exert
an evil Influence. The zeal of the pro
testers has outrun their discretion.
They have done more harm by speech
than they would have done by si
lence. It is simply none Of these peo
ple's business."
Probably Dr. , Noble has started
something among the woman's clubs
In Spokane and In this part of the
orthwest; but It Is evident he is pre
pared to defend his petition. It may
be added that Dr. Noble s not a de
votee of the maligned cigarette.

HABITUAL., INCORRIGIBLE ENEMY OF SOCIETY SHOULD
BE SOLEMNLY ADJUDGED TO BE PUT TO DEATH OR
SHUT UP FOR LIFE.
. I think society would be justified in assuming that the
time to attempt to reform him had passed. Upon his commission of
another crime I would have him tried , for what I think is the greatest
crime a man can be charged with, that of having become a HABI
TUAL AND INCORRIGIBLE ENEMY OF SOCIETY.
I would give him a FAIR TRIAL. I would require proof that
he had been a habitual criminal for a long term
of yeare. I would give-him an opportunity to
mako a full defense, and if finally it were estab
lished by clear proof that the man was one of
those, numbers of whom exist in modern society,
whoso nature has been degraded by a life of un
deviating wickedness into that of a wild beast,
INCAPABLE OF ANY SUBSTANTIAL IM
PROVEMENT OR ALTERATION, such a I
man, in my opinion, should be solemnly adjudged
to be PUT TO DEATH. But if, in view of the
squeamish sentimentality of this age, such a course be deemed im
practical I should SHUT HIM, UP FOR 'LIFE where he couid do
no more evil to society.
